Sometimes the easy play gets harder when an athlete starts thinking about who is watching.

This young player explained that when she starts worrying about being judged, thoughts like “Am I good enough?” can enter the moment.

And then something parents and coaches can actually see happens:

She may get nervous and miss a layup she normally knows how to make.

That does not automatically mean she suddenly lost the skill.

Her attention may have shifted from playing the possession to what everybody might think about the result.

Parents, if this sounds like your athlete, use the free Pressure Pattern Snapshot through the link in bio.

The response after the mistake does not always look the same.

I asked these young players what they did after something went wrong.

One talked about getting crossed and choosing to bring her energy back on the next play.

Another recognized that she needed to slow down, pace herself, and regain control instead of continuing to play out of control.

That is what pressure-response training is really about.

Not pretending the mistake did not happen.

It is recognizing what the moment requires next.

Sometimes that means more energy.
Sometimes that means slowing yourself down.

Parents, use the free Pressure Pattern Snapshot to identify what your athlete does after a difficult moment. Link in bio.

When more eyes are watching, young athletes feel it too.

This player said knowing scouts and other teams may be watching brings a little pressure — but also some excitement because people want to see her play.

And when that pressure starts getting heavier, she already has a response.

She prays.

She also talks with her mom before games, and her mom helps give her confidence and prays over her.

That is the part adults can miss: sometimes helping an athlete handle pressure is not another basketball instruction.

Sometimes it is helping them feel grounded before they compete.

Parents, if you want to better recognize how your athlete responds when pressure shows up, use the free Pressure Pattern Snapshot through the link in bio.
