Georges Collignon - Les modalités essentielles, 1951

Painted in 1951, Les modalités essentielles belongs to a decisive moment in Georges Collignon’s development. At the time, he stood at the heart of the Liège-based group Réalité-Cobra, one of the key post-war initiatives in Belgium devoted to the defence and dissemination of abstract art.

What makes this painting particularly compelling is the tension between construction and freedom. An intricate network of lines, planes and interlocking shapes creates movement across the surface. Ochres, oranges, creams, muted violets and green accents give the composition a rhythm somewhere between architecture, landscape and pure abstraction.

Rather than abandoning reality altogether, Collignon seems to reorganise it. Forms are broken apart and recombined into a dense pictorial structure in which colour, rhythm and material become the real subject.

The work stands at an important crossroads in post-war Belgian abstraction: between geometric construction and a freer, more instinctive pictorial language.

In 1950, the abstract group Réalité became Réalité-Cobra, the Belgian branch of the CoBrA movement, maintaining a distinctly non-figurative position.

Painted in 1951, Les modalités essentielles dates from the final year of Collignon’s involvement with Réalité-Cobra. In 1952, he became a founding member of Groupe Art Abstrait.

Italian pendant lamp by Lumen, Milan, c. 1952.

Brass, lacquered metal and nylon diffuser. Three light sources combining reflected ceiling light with an indirect downlight, creating a remarkably soft and sculptural illumination.

An elegant post-war Italian design, often mistakenly attributed to Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce due to its strong stylistic resemblance, yet produced by Lumen.

Original condition.
