bed shed: old devil moon [chorus 1]

a lot of my practice is informed by conversations i have with my grandad & friends.

FEEL
i had a conversation with my Pop Pop about my feel a few months ago that i think about everyday. it made me start dissecting where and how i believe feel comes into play and i think a lot of feel is just space. breath. “the funk of the pause”.

CHORDAL SOLOS
In a conversation i had recently with Braxton & Jacob they briefly, & quasi-jokingly, brought up they’d dare someone to play a chordal solo which i think we collectively feel like isn’t present enough in any music. i’ve also thought about that conversation everyday. lol i really like the soft pads i landed on at the end of this chorus

NOTE VALUES
it’s very easy to do a 8th or 16th note heavy solo but i honestly despise it lol even more so when i do it. pretty sure i missed the ball here lol. part of jim hall’s charm (to me) is how and when he experimented with note values in various tempos and context. i’ve been studying this for a while most notably through his playing on The Bridge and with Paul Desmond.

“GUITAR” SOLO
sometimes jazz* guitarists tend to solo more like pianists, horn players, or synth players which is all fine and dandy but i think there’s a certain charm in trying to find ways that the guitar can really sound like a guitar is a jazz sonic space. on this chorus, though much sloppier, im messing around with things i feel like guitar excels at by nature. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @alanaamore
