Hi friends, Alana here. Chief Confessor and Creative Provocateur at Confessions of a Creative. šŸ“

This space is a living archive of my creative life. It includes the uncertainty, the pivots, the hesitations, the doubt, and dare I say it, the courage to keep creating when the path is not fully revealed.

āž”ļøHere on IG @confessionsofacreative, you will find honest reflections, creative encouragement, and real glimpses into the process of bringing ideas to life.

āž”ļøOn Substack, I share deeper stories, personal reflections, and conversations around creativity, identity, and building a creative life that feels meaningful during these precarious times.

āž”ļøAnd over at my digital studio confessionsofacreative.co, you will soon find tools, resources, and offerings designed to support artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs as they shape their ideas into something tangible.

If you are creating something that feels authentic and meaningful, a book, a project, a space, or a new chapter, welcome to the confessional. Let’s adventure together!

Hugs.

Over a year and a half ago, I stepped away from most platforms. Last year, I chose to focus on writing and began publishing my work on Substack, turning my attention toward what felt most substantive: my life, being creative, connecting with others, and what actually matters.

šŸ“¢Taking a break from the gram– Let’s Stay Connected on SubstackšŸ“

Hey Loves,

As many of you already know, I’ve decided to step away from Instagram for a bit, just as I did with Facebook over two years ago—not just because of Meta’s policies, but because I’m craving a space that feels more aligned, intimate, intentional, and true to my creative life and process.

While I’ll be keeping my profiles on here and FB in tact (for now), if you want to stay connected, you can find me over on Substack, where I’ll be sharing through Diary of a Gen Xer —the creative crucible and dedicated space for the unfolding of my journey. With four decades of curious exploration and an insatiable fascination with the human experience, DOAG is my attempt to make art and meaning out of this little thing we call life.

Each week, you’ll find me in your inbox with Confessions of a Creative—a newsletter exploring the messy, beautiful process of living artfully with notes on inspiration, doubt, and making things anyway.

If you’ve enjoyed sharing space with me here and want to see what I’m up to, I’d love to connect over there!

šŸ“© Subscribe here: https://diaryofagenxer.substack.com or click the SociaTap link in my bio!

Let’s keep connecting, reflecting, and weaving stories in a space that feels intentional. See you there. šŸ–¤

The more you show up and actually make the art, write the thing, build the idea, create the work, the less you care about what other people think.

I think that’s part of what documenting these 50 days is teaching me. And what growing a little older and wiser does. The more I create, the more I’m inspired to motivate other artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs to keep going on their own journey.

Over ten years ago, I developed a philosophy called Living Artfully, a guide, if you will, for getting out of your own way and creating without conditions.

I’m sharing the art of D.A.N.C.E framework which is part of that philosophy, here—for FREE (link in my bio). Because we need more creatives, artists, and intentional entrepreneurs willing to reimagine and reshape the world we’re inhabiting which can sometimes feel fractured.

One way we do that is by using our voice.
Another is by making the art.

This is your invitation and to make the thing. šŸŽØ

As I approach 50, one thing I know for certain—I’m officially retiring from the need to explain myself so I can avoid being misunderstood.

What are you done explaining? More importantly, how are you imagining the next chapter of your journey?

Art is Alchemy

Art doesn’t always heal the thing. Sometimes it just gives pain, suffering, fear, grief, anger, and rage somewhere to land.

Women have always known this. That’s why there is a growing rage.

We for the most part, have learned how to wield it. To protect ourselves and the people we love.

Artists take what hurts and transmute it into something we can see, touch, hear, hold. It’s one of the oldest forms of healing we have.

We make meaning from what we’ve lived. ā™„ļø

Latest piece on Substack is up. It’s called What We Teach Our Sons. A meditation on masculinity, patriarchy, accountability, choosing and reimagining—something different. šŸ”—Link is in the bio to read the stack!

What we teach our sons matters.

Not just what we tell them, but what we model. What we laugh at. What we excuse. What we challenge.

Patriarchy has hurt all of us, but women and marginalized people have carried the weight of it for generations. And we are tired of it.

Our s growing. But we also know it is sacred.

So this is an invitation to the men who are doing the work: keep examining. Keep speaking up. Keep modeling another way.

Because sometimes changing the world starts with saying, ā€œHey, that’s not okay,ā€ when your friend thinks nobody is listening.

This work is not about getting it perfect. It is about being willing to acknowledge, to see, to question, to listen, and to keep choosing something different. To recognize patriarchy for what it is: an antiquated system and paradigm that must be dismantled, not simply in the world around us, but within all of ourselves.

As I approach 50, I’ve been reflecting and asking a lot of questions.

Being the oldest of three taught me how to be responsible, dependable, and really good at being needed.

I know we’ve been taught that prioritizing our needs is selfish, and that communicating our boundaries means we’re being difficult or sharp.

But taking care of ourselves and prioritizing our wellbeing is essential.

How can we be resourced enough to show up for the people we care about if we aren’t taking care of ourselves, too?

I’ve always been a curious cat. Constantly self reflecting—that’s what us writers do.

However, I’m asking myself a different question:

What do I need?

What about you? On your own journey, what are you pondering? What do YOU need?

Think about how much you’ve learned over the course of your life. All the versions of yourself you’ve outgrown.

Maybe the woman everyone knows isn’t the whole story. We need to make space for ALL of who we are.

I’m spending the next 50 days getting to know all the parts of myself a little better.

What’s a part of you people might not know?
What’s something you haven’t done yet and you just can’t stop thinking about? What is an edge for you right now?

I would LOVE to hear from you!šŸ‘‡

Being ā€œthe strong oneā€ who can manage it all can become a full-time job.

Trust me, if there’s anything I’ve learned over the last four decades, it’s that NO ONE is an island.

Here’s a reminder I have to repeat to myself, out loud and often:

You don’t have to carry it all just because you can.

It’s okay to ask for support.

And even when the path can feel solitary sometimes, it’s an opportunity to challenge yourself to do just that.

Your people really do want to show up for you. Community matters. We grow and learn together. šŸ’ž

I’m showing up, out loud, intentionally, and on purpose, to demonstrate that you can too. šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

We only have this one little life, friends. So, what’s something you’re learning to put down so you can step courageously into the next season of your life?

I’d love to hear from you!

Hugs,

xx Alana

Sometimes reimagining, reinventing, and redesigning your life isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about having the audacity to outgrow parts of yourself that no longer fit or are sustainable.

What are you ready to leave behind? What are you looking forward to in this season of your life?

I would love to hear what your 50 days to…reinvent, reimagine, or redesign your life looks like! Let’s RNVNT together!

49. Single. Self-committed. More content than I ever expected.

Earlier this year, I published my first book, Flecks of Gold, after 42 years of hiding the fact that I was a writer.

And now I know this much: I want to keep writing. I want to keep making things. I want to keep living creatively.

But what else?

With 50 staring me down, I’m giving myself 50 days to find out.

No five-year plan, reinvention blueprint, or permission required.

Just me, following the ideas I’ve been carrying around, reimagining, trying things, making things, changing my mind, and seeing what happens when I stop waiting to have it all figured out.

50 days to 50.

Let’s see where this goes.
