Yesterday marked the end of my PhD journey. Towards a Pathology of Desire will soon be published and enter the world of research. It has been a long and winding road and I have loved every minute of it (well, almost)...

A big shout out to all the original Cornerhouse gang and the Chat Chat cohort in CH.513 - it has been such a pleasure working alongside you all...

We're thrilled to introduce Alana Lake, our fourth artist featured in When Things Fail to Cohere: Members Show 2026!

Alana Lake’s practice is rooted in queer minimalism. Working primarily with glass, ceramic, metal, found objects and expanded painting, Lake examines how contemporary addictions, desires and repetitive behaviours shape culture and identity.

The works submitted for this year's show draws from Hal Foster’s essay 'Death in America', which re-examines Andy Warhol’s Death and Disaster series through the lens of ‘traumatic realism’. Traumatic realism acknowledges the persistent presence of death, shock and catastrophe in public life, reflecting Lake's interest in objects carrying political meaning and participating in the reinforcement (or disruption) of power.

—
When Things Fail to Cohere brings together four artists working across sculpture, installation, moving image, print and text to explore different states of uncertainty: the fear of and yearning for power; the freedom and struggle of the queer body; the drifting voyeur; and those who have lost their way. In their shared ambiguity, the works collectively invite a kind of disquieting contemplation.

📅 25 June 2026 – 8 August 2026
🎇 Launch Event: Thursday, 25 June, 6–8pm

Looking forward to Thursday's opening
When Things Fail to Cohere

Guest selected by Jun Rui Lo
Launch Event: 25 Jun, 6-8pm
Open 26 Jun - 8 August

Four artists working across sculpture, installation, moving image, print and text to explore different states of uncertainty: the fear of and yearning for power; the freedom and struggle of the queer body; the drifting voyeur; and those who have lost their way. In their shared ambiguity, the works collectively invite a kind of disquieting contemplation.

Alana Lake’s queer minimalist sculptures refer to the force and violence that belie structures of power. Similarly emphasising material realities, Lucy Marriott creates mythical flesh-like forms with inner tubes and rose thorns that play out the lived experiences of queer bodies. Romane Courdacher assembles photographs, sounds and other documentation records to unexpectedly conjure a spectral presence. And by skewing our visual perception, Ngo Chun Tse’s video installation is an uncanny reflection on movement and displacement. Keenly destabilising, When Things Fail to Cohere considers how we navigate and position the social realities that shape our lives.

Selector Bio:

Jun Rui Lo is a Hong Kong-born artist and curator based in Manchester who makes and curates with an interest in identity politics and the aesthetics of ambiguity. Rooted in their gender nonconformity and diasporic experience, their practice explores the fluidity and freedom of identity while giving form to feelings of melancholy and alienation. Lo creates spaces that unfold queer, diasporic, and transnational narratives through exhibition-making.
