Where do the electronics end and the ensemble begins? King Britt (@kingbritt) made the electronic material and the structure. Marcos Balter (@marcosbalter) wrote Alarm Will Sound into it, layer by layer, until the two are hard to pull apart. The piece grew out of Britt's Atomic Theory and had its first performance with us in St. Louis in 2019. It's one of four tracks on New Acoustica written expressly for and with the band, not arranged from an existing recording. Track 5 of New Acoustica, out now on @cantaloupeny. Rehearsing Georg Friedrich Haas's in vain at the @gardnermuseum. Twenty-four players, about seventy minutes, and two long stretches in complete darkness, played from memory and tuned to one another by ear. In Calderwood Hall the audience is stacked above the players on all four sides, so when the lights go out, nobody is watching from a safe distance. Kodak Hall, October 2. New Acoustica at Eastman, the school where we started 25 years ago. Eastman students joined us onstage, and we premiered a new Squarepusher movement. SOPHIE's (@msmsmsm_forever) premise was that a surface can be anything it wants to be. We took that seriously. Nearly every sound on our Faceshopping is a real object doing an impression of something digital. @alanconducts breaks one of them down. Faceshopping — SOPHIE, arr. Thank you all so much for the moving responses to Music for 18 Musicians: Staged Variations at the Park Avenue Armory. Making this production with all of these brilliant collaborators — @johnheginbotham, @peterferry, @hangrybrain, @myav.mp3, #UrsSchönebaum, @markgreymusic, @neumann.fragments, @maileok, @tactus.msm, @alarmwillsound, @carolineadelaideshaw, and of course #stevereich and his legendary ensemble — has been among the very greatest, most exhilarating joys of my artistic life. And your reactions have so warmed my heart. I've been catching my breath after the marathon push. But I'm now rolling up my sleeves, and digging into everything you've all written to me about your experiences at Staged Variations. Responses coming shortly.... And in the meantime ... It starts with an itch. That's how Chris P. Thompson (@chrispthompson) and Alan Pierson (@alanconducts) describe hearing a certain electronic track and needing to get inside it to see how it could be translated. Twenty-one years ago that itch produced Acoustica, our reinterpretation of thirteen Aphex Twin tracks. Today it produces New Acoustica, out now on @cantaloupeny. Aphex Twin is still the north star; he opens and closes the record. Alongside him: SOPHIE (@msmsmsm_forever), @jlin_p, @tim_exile, and Matt Rogers a.k.a. Gameshow Outpatient (@thsmthngpffs), taken apart and rebuilt for twenty acoustic instruments. And this time there's new work made with the artists: two pieces by @kingbritt, one with @marcosbalter and one with @starkcomposer; Back Against the Wall, which @jlin_p wrote for us to break down and rearrange with @igorseiti; and Cabeza, which @lucreciadalt built by sampling us, chopping and looping what she found, and handing it back for us to learn to play. Hanabi comes from Chris's own album Lot Hero (it was our bassist Miles Brown @awsbass who got the itch for that one). In 1999, Austria's far right took a share of power. A year later, Georg Friedrich Haas wrote in vain. Alex Ross called it a "modern masterpiece." In the music, peace is won and then lost, over and over. Much of the work is played in complete darkness. We bring it to @gardnermuseum next Thursday with Alan Pierson (@alanconducts), the second time we've played it this year after @timespansfestival in August. Footage above is from that night. "He was learning how to play piano by drawing keys on a piece of paper and silently practicing that way." @marykouyoumdjian on where Paper Pianos began: a 2016 email to Alarm Will Sound about a pianist who had just fled Afghanistan and needed an instrument. That pianist was Milad Yousufi. His story, with three others from Ethiopia, Somalia, and Iraq, became the spine of a work Mary calls sonic documentary — interviews set within her music, staged by @nigelmaister, beneath @kevork_mourad's drawings. Mary is the first in at least three generations of her family who is not a refugee. The piece's hope, in her words, is to open a line of empathy toward experiences that can feel distant but turn on what is close to home: love, family, safety, and the freedom to express. Paper Pianos, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, is eligible this cycle. 60 Hz in Louisville. 50 Hz in Sofia. In "Two Clinics," The American waits for test results under fluorescent lights, and the scene cuts between the clinic in Sofia where he sits and the memory of one in Louisville, where he grew up. David T. Little (@davidtlittle) needed a fast way to tell you which room you're in, so he tuned the scene to the lights themselves: the 60-cycle hum of American current and the 50-cycle hum of Europe's. The two pitches sit a minor third apart but don't conform to standard musical tuning, so the ensemble has to tune to them. As the music drifts from one to the other, the buzz tells you where you are. What Belongs to You is eligible in Best Opera Recording, Best Contemporary Classical Composition, Best Engineered Album, Classical, and Best Album Notes. alarmwillsound.com/for-your-consideration/ What Belongs to You Music and libretto by David T. 💫 Catch a glimpse of the magic of @alanconducts’ “Music for 18 Musicians: Staged Variations,” featuring the Steve Reich Ensemble, @tactus.msm, @alarmwillsound, and guest artist @carolineadelaideshaw. Only two performances of the sold-out “incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience” (The New York Classical Review) remain! by @alanconducts
Jlin gets called a composer. She'd rather say manipulator of sound. "A lot of times I'm given the title composer, electronic composer. I would now say I am a manipulator, a manipulator of sound, but at the same time very open to collaboration. Manipulation and collaboration usually don't go in the same setting. But it's the intent… I'm trying to create as many possibilities as I can from a sound that I hear." On "Back Against the Wall" the manipulating is done by hand. @igorseiti rebuilt her glitches from overpressed strings and scraped percussion, and bent the unisons slightly out of tune so nothing gets smoothed over.
