An unexpected highlight of moving up to the country has been being able to spend time outdoors in an unstructured way.

Before moving, my access to nature (other than city parks and beach days) was limited to hikes, or activities that in general required a lot out of me and had a set start + end time. I still hike, but my relationship to nature is different now. Our lives intermingle in visible and ordinary ways. There’s no time constraint, or big-to-do needed to close the gap between myself and the ecosystem I call home.

I’ve been going out of my way these last few weeks to engage in a slower way of moving— which also means a slower way of making.

I haven’t taken many photos; my film camera has moved back and forth btwn the passenger seat of my car and then back to the coffee table to collect dust for weeks now. It’s felt nice leaving it behind every time. I love taking photos, but their making sometimes feels too fast. I probably would feel different if I were developing, but for right now they feel quick and almost transactional.

I’ve instead returned to my sketchbook to draw from life, memory, and dream. I’m present in a different way, getting lost in colors and form. I make mistakes, I double back, and I’m never quite certain when I’m done. And it’s all a relief.

I’ve been going on walks instead of hikes. I’ll walk 10 minutes up a trail that if I continued on would reach over 3500 ft of elevation, only to turn back to examine a bright mushroom before meandering to my car at the trailhead below.

I’ll make random turnoffs on the road. Drive annoyingly slow while looking for a creek to swim or a field to sniff. Penelope mostly does the latter one.

I take the time to let myself be moved by my own intuition and curiosity. There’s no expectation to meet, or peak to bag. Maybe let this be a reminder to get outside with no plan, you need it!! by @alanisvulpis

When I tell people I like to go hiking with my dog the reaction tends to be that of concern and fear. And I don’t just mean for my safety as a woman in the woods, but for my dog as well.

From the moment I adopted Penelope, I’ve worked hard to set expectations of her in all different kinds of environments and situations. As an intelligent cattle dog, she enjoys thinking about the rules and commands I set, and of course she loves the treats I reward her with which is a huge driving factor as well.

Training has been such a great relationship builder for us. I have to think like a dog and spot triggers before she does, and in exchange she is in tune with the world around us in a way that surpasses my abilities + she has a great resting bitch face for when strangers pass by.

A couple of months ago we ran into a timber rattlesnake on the trail and I didn’t see it in time before Penelope pounced. I recalled her before I even knew what was going on, and she immediately came back to my side.

It was a real testament to where we are at in our training. She is still a puppy as you can see from the way she’s jumping around all silly in this video. But what matters is she listens, and she trusts me.

That being said, I always carry a K9 first aid kit and emergency carry bag with me, even on the short hikes. And plentyyyyy of water.
