Reconditioning a cask at Alba Cooperage is a craft in itself. We start by deconstructing the barrel, inspecting each stave for integrity. The interior is then shaved to expose fresh oak, removing tired layers and reducing sulphur compounds. After that, we apply a custom char - usually level 3 or 4 - using open flame to reactivate flavour potential. Hoops are reset, leaks are tested, and every cask leaves ready for a second life in spirit. 🔥🪵🛠️ by @alba_cooperage

It might be midweek, but there’s no cutting corners here. Each cask is carefully tested — rolled, balanced, and inspected to make sure it’s watertight (or spirit-tight, more like). by @alba_cooperage

Every cask tells a story and it starts in the cooperage. Skilled coopers shape oak with fire, steam, and tradition to craft the vessels that mature your whisky. Precision, patience, and generations of knowledge passed through hand and hammer.

Here in Scotland, coopering remains a time-honoured trade. The cask is more than a container. It’s a partner in the ageing process, adding up to 70% of a whisky’s flavour. by @alba_cooperage

Inside the barrel, the story begins.

Before a cask can shape the spirit, it needs to be cleaned and prepped. We remove old char and oak debris, getting the cask ready for re-charring or reuse. It’s part of the process that gives each cask a second life — and every whisky a unique finish.
