Water security is a national priority, and philanthropy is stepping up to help meet it.

In September, the Canada Water Agency and the Canada Water Security Funders Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration on water security across Canada. Alberta Ecotrust is proud to be a member of the Funders Group, alongside foundations and funders from coast to coast to coast.

The agreement opens the door to knowledge exchange, combined investment and a philanthropic voice in shaping Canada’s National Water Security Strategy.

Why it matters for Alberta: floods, droughts and wildfires have cost over $4 billion since 2020. Reducing those risks takes long-term, coordinated investment in healthy watersheds. That means government, philanthropy and communities working together.

As convenor of the Alberta Coalition for Watershed Security, we’ll continue bringing Alberta’s watershed priorities to the table as this collaboration grows #WaterSecurity #WatershedSecurity #NatureBasedSolutions #Alberta

Three years of the Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Westin Edmonton yesterday for our anniversary luncheon. We heard from industry leaders on how construction is handling affordability, resilience and sustainability.

Here’s to the next three years of building an emissions-neutral Alberta together! #yeg by @albertaecotrust

We are thrilled to announce that Alberta Ecotrust Foundation has received a $1-million grant from the Peter Gilgan Foundation to support the Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange (ENBIX) from November 2026 to November 2029.

“A sustainable, prosperous Alberta will be built by people, so investing in capacity and workforce development is how we deliver affordability, good jobs and high performance standards. By serving as a trusted voice between industry and regulators, and backed by funders including Peter Gilgan Foundation, we’re showing what alignment between industry, philanthropy and government can achieve,” says Mike Mellross, VP of Alberta Ecotrust. "The Peter Gilgan Foundation's investment means we can reach more of the industry across the province and help move research into practice on real projects. We're grateful for their partnership and their confidence in this work."

Thank you to all who attended the three-year anniversary of ENBIX as we made this exciting announcement. by @albertaecotrust

Circular Spotlight: Strengthening Communities

Community-led solutions are at the heart of the shift to circularity. We are proud to support the organizations leading change across our province and demonstrating how a circular economy framework can foster community resilience, enhance affordability and equity, and deepen connections.

In our latest blog post, we highlight the success of two of our grantees, @EnvironmentLeth and @Biosphere.Institute, and their efforts in cultivating circular practices in their communities.

Circular Spotlight: Waste Reduction Week

Waste reduction is not just about recycling. It can also look like reusing, repairing or refurbishing items that might otherwise become waste.
Many organizations are offering some great opportunities to keep items out of the waste stream and in use. Check out events from organizations across Alberta throughout October and November:
@thearushacentre: Repair Exchanges (Calgary, multiple dates)

Mountain Grannies of the Bow Valley: Reuse Rendezvous (Bow Valley, Nov. 7)

@CityofEdmonton: Reuse Centre Swap events (Edmonton, multiple dates)

@Environmentleth: Go Analog Community Swap (Lethbridge, Nov. 8)

Through real-world examples and shared dialogue, we’ll highlight the deep connections between people and the land, and how investing in nature helps Albertans thrive.

When: November 17 and 18, 2026
Where: Calgary, AB | cSPACE Marda Loop and Carriage House Hotel & Conference Centre by @albertaecotrust

Circular Spotlight: Building Economic Resilience

Circular business models can help businesses and residents use resources more efficiently and save money. One example is the “mobility as an amenity” service by @KiteMobility, one of Alberta Ecotrust’s impact investments. Kite offers shared electric vehicles, e-bikes and e-scooters to residents of multi-family buildings.

Circular Spotlight: Protecting the Planet

One of the core principles of the circular economy is “regenerate nature,” which means using approaches that restore and work with natural systems.

Regenerative agriculture is one example of this principle in action. It focuses on restoring soil health, supporting biodiversity and using water and other inputs more efficiently, while still producing food.
