SONG OF MYSELF — WALT WHITMAN (1855)

“I celebrate myself, and sing myself.”

What if simply being alive were reason enough to celebrate?

The grass beneath our feet.
The air entering our lungs.
The warmth of the sun.
The body. The soul. The extraordinary fact that we are here.

First published in Leaves of Grass in 1855, Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself” is an exuberant celebration of existence, nature, individuality, freedom, and our profound connection to one another.

Whitman looks at the ordinary and discovers the infinite.

Every atom matters.
Every life belongs to something greater.
And existence itself becomes poetry.

“I exist as I am, that is enough.”

Perhaps sometimes we need no greater reason to celebrate life than this:

We are here.
We are alive.
And that is enough.

DARKNESS — LORD BYRON (1816)

Imagine waking up tomorrow and the sun never rises.

No morning.
No warmth.
No light.
Only darkness.

Written in 1816, during the “Year Without a Summer,” following the massive eruption of Mount Tambora, Lord Byron’s Darkness imagines the gradual disappearance of civilization as humanity is consumed by fear, hunger, violence and despair.

The poem begins as a dream.
It becomes a nightmare.
And ends with one terrifying image:

Darkness is no longer around us.
Darkness is everything.

More than two centuries later, Byron’s vision remains disturbingly powerful.

We need more poetry in our lives — words that help us feel, reflect, and give meaning to our existence. So here is a beautiful poem by the Japanese poet Shuntarō Tanikawa, who expresses so profoundly what it means to be alive in this very moment.

所以今天,我想分享一首由日本诗人 Shuntarō Tanikawa 创作的优美诗作。
这首诗深刻而细腻地表达了“活在当下”究竟意味着什么。
