En librairie le 12 mars. In bookshops from March 12.

A quick story:
Way back in college, I printed up a batch of poems, stapled them together, and titled the collection “Poems and Other Crimes”. My art teacher, Mr Ishmael, generously did a sketch for the cover, and kind-hearted friends and supportive profs bought copies. People wished me “luck” in the arts. And the matter was never mentioned again up to graduation.

Still, here we are once more, with poems that came unbidden - this time focusing on history, memory, ports, the sea, crossings, motherhood, childhood, migration, resistance, “redemption” songs - in a new and expanded bilingual (French-English) collection.

This follows the 2024 English-Portuguese volume of UNARMED MARINERS / MARINHEIROS DESARMADOS (part of my work as a 2023 selected artist in the MANIFEST project), translated by H. Lopes, with cover art by JDC and Jaemin.

Part 1 speaks of the sea / la mer.
Part 2 (new) looks at life-travels with a mother / la mère.

Official launch on March 12 in Paris @ beautiful Librairie Calypso. Sincere appreciation to @fabdezab and team for all the work on the publication.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY

In 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the “role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development”, and declared Sept. 30 as International Translation Day.

This meant “an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals”; and, for writers, it’s a chance especially to say a big thank-you to literary translators.

Over the years, it’s been inspiring to work with truly amazing translators, alongside trailblazing indie publishers, talented artists, and multilingual family members and friends. The photos show some of the fruits of this work.

So, mèsi onpil, merci beaucoup, muchas gracias, 非常感谢, grazie mille, Vielen Dank, muito obrigada, mörg þakkir, wel bedankt, tenk you …
& Happy International Translation Day on Sept. 30. Peace.

Well, no one painted apples or onions (or card players) quite like Paul Cézanne.

And yes, it’s the season of big exhibitions.

“CEZANNE ET NOUS” runs from September 23 to January 17 (2027) @le_grand_palais, and the show puts his work in dialogue with that of his contemporaries as well as with later artists whom he influenced.
Interesting concept, as usual. We see the apple “reimagined”, for instance, in a “monumental still life” by pop artist Tom Wesselmann (slide 6), among other reinterpretations.

Of course, there are also memorable landscapes and portraits, not just still lifes.

Educational and visually engaging. (And the apple juice offered, coincidentally, at the start was quite refreshing.)

Pictured works by Paul Cézanne: Pommes et biscuits (1880); Fruits, serviette et boîte à lait (ca 1880); Vase paillé, sucrier et pommes (bet. 1890 & 1894); Nature morte au tiroir ouvert (bet. 1877 & 1879); Nature morte aux oignons (bet. 1896 & 1898); Les Joueurs des cartes (1893 & 1896). Tom Wesselmann: Still Life #29 (1963).

Great to see the exhibition “KERRY JAMES MARSHALL: THE HISTORIES” @museedartmodernedeparis and to speak with the artist and with curator @markgodfrey1973.

The show runs from 18 Sept. 2026 to 24 Jan. 2027 in Paris, after its huge success in London @royalacademyarts, and later in Zurich @kunsthauszuerich.

(Found out from KJM that he spent time in Jamaica, working as production designer on the acclaimed film “Sankofa”, which was shot in Ghana and Jamaica, directed by Ethiopian filmmaker Haile Gerima. The experience on this and other movies also influenced his painting.)

A must-see exhibition. Article soon.

* Works by Kerry James Marshall pictured in the post include: Voyager (1972); Souvenir II (1997); Untitled (Painter) (2008); Wake / Gulf Stream (2003).
