i could tell you how i got here but the story would be long and full of women

one woman with five kids and another with five kids watched my mother give life to five kids and held her hand when the waters were rough. i have more aunties than i can count, and every time i see them my day is that much brighter. we have a tradition where your first child is not the one that comes from your womb but the one you hold when you are just old enough to babysit by yourself.

when i think of my mama and every mother (in every sense) i’ve met i think of being held as close as the baby pics on my mama’s keychain. when my cousins’ have their babies i see them learn to think beyond themselves fiercely - the way we have all been practicing the whole time. there are not words enough to say what that is like, but “if you know, you know.” i am blessed to be surrounded by 100 arms everywhere i go. inspired by women who advise more than judge, who laugh and cry all day, who are stronger than steel, and equal parts wild and meticulous. mother’s day is always overwhelming because the love we amplify is already bigger than the sun.

if you or your mama ever lent my mother a hand in raising me and my clones: we love you!

if i rewrote this prose it would just say thank you until the characters ran out
