POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Feeling so grateful for the incredible crew and curatorial team at @_smoca for helping me realize the most ambitious iteration of this work to date - thank you thank you thank you! Big love to the fam and my new and old friends that came through for the opening to celebrate this work - it was so great to catch up with folks, even if briefly. There’s obviously more to say, but for now, I have so much gratitude that this work is in the world and that I was able to be present for the lovely opening evening. Congrats to the other artists included in the adjacent shows down the hall (expertly curated by Keisha) and it’s such a joy to have my work in conversation with theirs! Shoutout to @teeqeetee for taking most of these pics.

If you’re in the Phoenix area, the work remains on view until Feb 7, and I’ll return to the area for a performance for a closing event, more details soon! taken in Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) by @alejandroacierto

A huge thank you to alejandro t. acierto for visiting UNCW's campus, sharing his work and practice with our Graphic Design and Time-Based Media students, and opening up honest conversations about process, intentional design, and life as a working artist.

"open grounds for wholly indeterminate futures" explores the complicated relationships between people, wildlife, and rapidly shifting landscapes. Tracing how urban expansion and climate change across the Sonoran Desert are reshaping what it means to survive and belong there.
The exhibition is on view through May 22. Pop by anytime to view it from the outside, or reach out to schedule a time to see inside the gallery.

"Following the steady rise of rapid urban growth across Phoenix Arizona’s metropolitan areas in the last several decades, the region’s vastly diverse natural habitats have increasingly been replaced by sprawling housing developments, expansive commercial warehousing facilities, and enormous tech campuses for international manufacturing and distribution. Leaving an indelible mark upon the fragile ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert alongside the longstanding effects of climate change in the region, the area’s natural wildlife has seen significant shifts that have altered their capacity to thrive amidst dwindling natural resources.

Simultaneously, residents across the city’s urban desert landscape have faced devastatingly harmful temperatures, an increasingly dangerous water crisis, and a significant shortage of affordable housing that makes living there particularly precarious, especially those facing housing insecurity. Noting these tensions, this body of work navigates how the conditions of a constantly shifting landscape anticipate more complicated stories of relation between humans, non-humans, and the environments they inhabit."

In "of sight, of mind," our current main gallery exhibition, viewers are met by a watchtower made from oriented strand board (OSB) and 2x4s upon entry.

At undetermined intervals, a bright overhead security lamp intermittently flashes, a reference to the looming and increased reality of panopticism.

(When we listened to our queer and trans incarcerated pen pals and connections, they remarked about new levels of heightened security and the feeling of being watched and scrutinized even while they served their time).

Regardless of our collective experiences with police, we are all impacted by the structures of their gaze, by the weight of potential enforcement.

This installation instead insists on a refusal to ignore the specifics of state violence, to keep these occurrences in the present at the top of our consciousness.

Organized by alejandro t. acierto, the installation features alejandro t. acierto, Dan Paz, dana middleton, Ava Aviva Avnisan, and Molly Merryman.

Gallery hours are 1-4 pm and by appointment. The exhibition is on view through Friday, March 27. taken in Vulpes Bastille by @alejandroacierto
