In a circle of the Ju/’hoansi women, I sit—
wrapped in stories older than maps.
They speak of wombs and wildness, of birth as a journey through the wild.
No manuals. No measurements.
Only hands, songs, and stories—
a lineage of life passed on in whispers beneath the thorn trees.
Their wisdom steadies me. Their presence softens the path.❤️🥰👼🏻

Among the Ovamwila of southern Angola, beauty is not decoration. It is biography.
Hair, clay, beads, earth, each carries information: age, belonging, marriage, memory. The body becomes an archive. Nothing seems entirely separate from the landscape that made it.
It is tempting to look at this and romanticise it. To say: they have so little, yet they have so much. But that would ignore the harder reality.
Communities that are extraordinarily wealthy in culture can still be made poor by the world surrounding them.
When land, language, livelihoods and systems of belonging are weakened, people do not simply step neatly into “modernity.” They are often chewed up by it. Cash poverty arrives. Alcohol arrives. Dependency arrives. Young people are taught that what their grandparents know has little value, while being offered very little of equal value in return.
And slowly, a society can become materially richer while becoming culturally impoverished.
Perhaps this is one of the great misunderstandings of our age: that development can be measured only by what people acquire.
Because wealth is also knowing who you are.
Knowing where you belong.
Knowing the plants beneath your feet.
Knowing the stories of your people.
Knowing what is expected of you, and what you are responsible for.
The tragedy is not that Indigenous and traditional communities need to remain unchanged.
The tragedy is when they are asked to exchange an entire architecture of meaning for the poorest edges of ours.
We should be asking not only how people can have more. But how they can enter the future without having to become less💪

What if the biggest lie about the Kalahari is that it’s empty? And what if it’s actually a 900.000 square-km living map of human knowledge?

I’m currently in Botswana to document a new initiative: The Kalahari San Trail. An initiative that reconnects the old San routes across the Kalahari, routes between water and family. Between hunting grounds and gathering places, sip wells, healing grounds and animal paths.

A geography carried in memory rather than on maps.

For thousands of years, San bushmen moved through this landscape reading what most of us no longer know how to see. A broken twig. A change in wind. The shape of a track. Where water might still be hiding beneath sand.

A lot of those routes are gone. Broken up by fences, farms, roads, conservation boundaries and people being moved away from ancestral land. And once people stop moving through the land, the knowledge attached to it starts disappearing too.

The San Trail is an attempt to reconnect those old pathways between people, places and wildlife and recognise the Kalahari for what it has always been: one of the world’s oldest living cultural landscapes.

So the plan is to start walking these routes again with elders, mapping them, recording the stories and waterpoints, joined by new generations of San people, while slowly stitching the landscape back together.

So in the long run, the Trail becomes both a cultural corridor and an ecological corridor.

And therefore, we’re here to help visualize the big question: Can we bring the Kalahari’s ancient knowledge back to life, by walking it again? by @alekswildchild

One year ago 🩷
you arrived
with the morning.
DesertRose.
A name we had carried
before we knew your face.
And now somehow
you have been here
for one whole turning of the earth.
Twelve months of carrying you,
feeding you,
waking beside you,
walking with you
through dust and rain
and long nights.
You have learned the world
with your whole body.
Sand in your hands.
Wind in your hair.
Birdsong.
Firelight.
The rhythm of people dancing.
The sound of languages
you do not yet understand
but already belong to.
And I have learned
a different world too.
That love has weight.
That a small sleeping body
can make an arm ache
and a heart heal
at exactly the same time.
That time can move impossibly slowly
at three in the morning
and impossibly fast
across a year.
I still look at you sometimes
and cannot understand
that you are real.
My wild little girl.
May you grow knowing
that the earth is not beneath your feet
but something you belong to.
May you know animals
not only from books,
but from tracks in the sand.
May you know old people,
old stories,
old trees
and the value of things
the world is in danger of forgetting.
May you be soft
without ever becoming small.
May you be brave
without needing to be hard.
May you wander.
May you question.
May you dance
simply because
there is no reason not to.
And wherever life carries you,
may there always be
a little Kalahari dust
somewhere on your skin.
Happy first birthday, DesertRose.
You have only been here one year.
And already
you have changed
the whole landscape of our life. by @alekswildchild

Most had never held a paintbrush.
Then the colour came.
No rules. No lessons in how art is supposed to look. Just hands that have spent a lifetime reading spoor, digging roots, shaping wood, following animals — suddenly leaving their own tracks across a canvas.

DesertRose’s first big road trip.
Angola 🇦🇴
A country of impossible scale and strange contrasts. Oil beneath the earth, diamonds in the ground, great rivers moving through a vast and beautiful land.
Travelling slowly, you begin to see beyond the postcard. Red earth. Old Portuguese buildings fading into the landscape. Villages appearing along endless roads. Children waving as you pass. Life unfolding everywhere, often with very little, but with an energy that is difficult to describe.
Angola feels both ancient and unfinished. Rich in things that can be taken from the earth, and richer still in space, wildness, people and possibility.
Not her first journey, but her first proper road trip.
Perhaps that is what the road teaches best: that places are never one thing. They can hold beauty and hardship, abundance and simplicity, history and hope all at once.
Angola ❤️ until next time. by @alekswildchild

There is something extraordinary about watching an ostrich eggshell become a bead.
For the Ju/’hoansi, these small white circles are more than adornment. They belong to one of the oldest bead-making traditions on Earth 🌍 a practice stretching back tens of thousands of years across southern Africa.

At Jack’s Camp, the Wisdom Academy becomes the first fire.
A living place of learning, where San elders, master trackers, healers, craft makers, storytellers and cultural teachers gather to pass on what was never written, but always remembered.
Here, knowledge returns to the hands, the feet, the voice, the land.
Young San participants learn directly from their elders in the Kalahari itself — reading spoor, plants, animals, water, wind and silence. They learn the old games, the songs, the dances, the healing practices, the stories, the language, and the quiet intelligence needed to move through this ancient landscape with respect.
The Academy gives structure, dignity and livelihood to knowledge too long overlooked.
It is a place where elders are recognised as libraries.
Where culture is not displayed, but lived.
Where the next generation is invited back into the great remembering. by @alekswildchild
