Zephyr Cove. Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Lake Tahoe has been home to the Washoe people for thousands of years and was first documented by General John C. Frémont in 1844. Originally called Da’awaga by the Washoe, the lake was later renamed Lake Bigler prior to officially becoming Lake Tahoe in 1945.

Formed more than two million years ago and shaped by glaciers, Lake Tahoe is North America’s largest alpine lake. Straddling the California–Nevada border, it’s renowned for its crystal-clear blue waters, towering mountain scenery, and remarkable depth of 1,645 feet.

On the lake’s eastern shore, Zephyr Cove is named after Zephyrus, the Greek god of the west wind, in honor of the powerful summer Washoe Zephyr winds that have been famously described by writers such as Mark Twain.

1936 Historic Log Hanger. Bryce Canyon Airport. Bryce Canyon City, Utah.

Located four miles north of Bryce Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon Airport has served as a gateway to the breathtaking landscapes of Bryce Canyon Country for nearly a century.

The airport’s most remarkable feature is its historic log hangar, built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Constructed from locally harvested ponderosa pine, the hangar is a rare example of New Deal-era craftsmanship and is considered both an engineering achievement and an architectural treasure. Due to the fact that local ranchers and farmers had little experience designing airplane hangars, they adapted familiar log-building techniques, creating a rustic structure that resembles a traditional mountain lodge.

The logs used in its construction came from a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) project that removed black beetle-infested ponderosa pines. After being milled near the East Fork Sevier River, the timber was hauled to the airport by horse-drawn teams. The hangar’s massive 83-foot wooden trusses support its gabled roof, while rounded log infill gives the exterior its distinctive half-timbered appearance.

The building quickly became more than an aviation facility. Beginning in 1938, Garfield County used the spacious hangar to host community dances, celebrations, and other public gatherings, making it a cherished landmark for both residents and visitors.

In recognition of its unique history and architecture, Bryce Canyon Airport was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Today, the airport continues to welcome travelers from around the world and serves as the home of Bryce Canyon Helicopters and other scenic flight operators.

Nearly ninety years after its construction, it remains an important transportation hub and a lasting symbol of the vision and craftsmanship that helped make Bryce Canyon one of the nation’s most celebrated destinations.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah.

Bryce Canyon National Park is situated along the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in south-central Utah. The area was originally designated as Bryce Canyon National Monument on June 8, 1923, to preserve its extraordinary scenic beauty and geological significance. In 1924, it was renamed Utah National Park and transferred from the U.S. Forest Service to the National Park Service. On February 25, 1928, it officially became Bryce Canyon National Park. Subsequent legislation expanded the park to its present size of 35,835 acres.

Bryce Canyon is world-renowned for its spectacular geology, featuring a series of horseshoe-shaped natural amphitheaters carved into the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Over countless centuries, frost wedging and rainwater erosion sculpted the colorful rock layers of the Claron Formation into an extraordinary landscape of towering hoodoos, narrow slot canyons, fins, and natural windows. The vibrant reds, oranges, pinks, and whites of these unique formations create a breathtaking maze unlike anywhere else in the world, offering visitors unforgettable hiking and sightseeing experiences.

The park’s rim is bordered by ponderosa pine forests, high-elevation meadows, and spruce-fir woodlands that provide habitat for a diverse array of wildlife. Bryce Canyon is also known for its exceptionally clear air, with panoramic views extending nearly 200 miles across three states on a clear day. Combined with its remote location and minimal light pollution, these conditions make Bryce Canyon National Park one of the premier destinations in the world for stargazing, allowing visitors to experience some of the darkest and most spectacular night skies in North America.
