NEW SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER JOY GODDESS EVENTS! I hope to see you in DC, Atlanta, Jackson, and Indy this month and next. One of the lovely bonuses of my A’Lelia Walker biography is having new readers for “On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. This morning I was thrilled to be on the
@todayshow with @alroker talking about my book -- Joy Goddess: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance -- as we toured Madam Walker's Villa Lewaro in Irvington, NY. Having started my network TV news career at @nbcnews almost 50 years ago, it was a full circle moment for me as I had the pleasure of working with associate producer Haley Clark, a consummate professional, and the talented camera crew.

All TV news segments are collaborative efforts so I also am grateful to @simonandschuster @scribnerbooks publicist @addiegilligan, who shepherded this process, and to William James and the generous folks at Villa Lewaro who opened the home to us.

I always have a sense that the ancestors are sending their encouragement as I tell these family stories so I'm going to allow myself to think that it's more than just a lovely coincidence that today would have been my mother's 97th birthday.

I hope you enjoy the segment. I'd love it if you'd share the link with others and if you'd encourage friends to consider Joy Goddess as their summer vacation read. While everything in the book is 100% true and carefully documented non-fiction, I'm very happy that folks tell me it has the drama and twists and turns of good fiction. by @aleliabundles

Who was A’Lelia Walker?

@ALeliaBundles’ JOY GODDESS is a vibrant biography of A’Lelia Walker—America’s first high profile Black heiress and daughter of millionaire entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker. A’Lelia was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance and a patron of the arts through the Dark Tower salon.

Joy Goddess creates a meticulous and nuanced portrait of a charismatic woman who sought her own light as a wife, mother, and businesswoman outside her famous mother’s sphere. by @aleliabundles

INSPIRED by the powerful conversation with @aleliabundles at the Martha’s Vineyard Black Book Festival about the journey of writing a book and preserving the stories that shape who we are.

We need to tell our stories. We need to document our history, honor those who came before us, and make sure future generations know where they come from.

If we don’t tell our stories, who will?

10/7 DC FRIENDS: I’d love to see you on 10/7 at 6:30 p.m. when I’ll be moderating a conversation with biographer @reboomer Ray Boomhower, author of “Wallace Terry: A Reporter’s Journey from Selma to Saigon to Bloods,” and panelists Marvin Kalb and Lisa Victoria Terry at NYU’s Brademas Center in Washington, DC. In this first full-length biography of Terry, Boomhower examines the pioneering career of Time magazine’s first Black national correspondent and how he helped shape public understanding of both the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Terry’s groundbreaking 1984 book, “Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Black Veterans,” and the audio recording, “Guess Who’s Coming Home,” chronicled the reality of the experiences of Black GIs. His posthumously published 2007 book, “Missing Pages: Black Journalists of Modern America,” captured the stories of other pioneers like Ethel Payne, Ed Bradley, Carl Rowan, Max Robinson, William Raspberry, Barbara Reynolds, Chuck Stone, Bernard Shaw, Carole Simpson and Earl Caldwell.

10/3 INDIANAPOLIS Free Press Indiana’s daylong ArcFest event is perfectly timed to shine a light on the threats to freedom of speech, the American free press and the role of journalism in a democracy.

I’m honored to be included on the panel at 1:10 p.m. at IUI’s Hine Hall with @tamarawinfreyharris, Dr. Leslie K. Etienne, Kisha Tandy and @nicole_martinezlegrand

ArcFest is a collaboration of @freepressindnews and @mirrorindy Mirror Indy that brings together influential voices, artists, journalists, and civic leaders to explore what it means to participate in the life of our communities and how each of us can help shape the next chapter of the American story as our national celebrates its 250th anniversary.

It is beyond ironic during the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence that the very ideals and aspirations of American democracy set forth in the Declaration and the Constitution are being dismantled and undermined. But that is exactly why I choose to declare my place and rights as an American whose ancestors participated in building this nation. I refuse to be silenced, erased or dismissed by ignorant bigots.

9/25 IN ATLANTA: it will be a joy to take the stage with my friend @lindaclemons (Sisterpreneur founder) and @lizamickens (great-great-granddaughter of Richmond, VA banker Maggie Lena Walker) at @theashleynicoleshow Ashley Kirkwood’s SOLD OUT Black Women Sell Live conference. Ashley is a BOSS: a former trial attorney who walked away from a partner-track legal career to found a very successful sales training company.
Although the event is sold out, you can join the wait list, learn more about the organization and be ready for next year.
