In honor of Breast Cancer awareness month, I want to share a story with you. Stick with me, this may be a bit long, but it's important.
I am 34 and last week I had my first mammogram. I had some unusual discharge from my nipple and brought it to my doctor's attention, she didn't feel anything in her exam, but she didn't want to just say you are fine, don't worry about it. No, instead she said, I don't feel anything, but I want you to go get a diagnostic mammogram just to be safe and rule out any possibility that something is there. That is what a Dr should do, they should care and just because they didn't find anything doesn't mean something isn't there. So I had my mammogram last week, everyone that helped me that day was extremely professional, kind and explained everything that they did and what to expect. I was also scheduled for an ultrasound. In-between the mammogram and the ultrasound, I was in a small waiting room with one other woman. We got to talking and she was diagnosed 10 years ago after a rough divorce and her kids were 11 and 13 at the time. I was 11 when my dad died of cancer, so her story hit me pretty hard. She shared with me how her kids reacted, how she promised she wasn't going anywhere and that she would fight. She went through 2 years of chemo, had a full mastectomy on one side and has been in remission for 8 years. She wasn't there for a routine follow up this day, she had new symptoms. Through out her sharing, tears flowed from my eyes. When the ultrasound tech came to get me, my heart was just hurting for her. We didn't get to finish that conversation, I never even got her name, but I hugged her, told her how strong she was and that what ever happened that day, she would get through that too.
I luckily got an all clear from both my results,but I will remember this beautiful strong woman the rest of my life.
