Sometimes, to survive, a community has to move, literally.
Deep in the heart of the Aso Valley lies a fascinating tale of two villages: Collina Vecchia and Collina Nuova.
Founded in the Early Middle Ages, Collina Vecchia was an ancient castle perched on a natural promontory, completely cocooned and protected by dense forests. For centuries, its people thrived on agriculture, spirituality, and craftsmanship. But nature had other plans. After centuries of relentless landslides, earthquakes, and deforestation, the old hilltop became too fragile to inhabit.
In 1930, the community made a brave choice: they left their ancestral home behind and founded Collina Nuova just a short distance away, a modern, peaceful rural village where life continues today.
Meanwhile, Collina Vecchia was left to time, slowly reclaimed by nature. Today, walking through its quiet, overgrown ruins feels like stepping directly into a forgotten chapter of history.
