I always loved when Vavo would tell the story about her wanting to be an actress when she was young. In her small villa in the Azores, she once went against her mother’s wishes to play a rag doll in a local play. Every time she told that story, I could see the joy in her eyes. She would always tell me that my love for performing came from her. Times like this make it very difficult to live away, but I hope I have made her proud by pursuing something she wasn’t able to.

In her almost 100 years, this saint of a person instilled her values in eight children, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and everyone else she came into contact with. She immigrated to a foreign land in search of a better life, and on her own, she raised this empire of strong, kind-hearted, hard-working people that I’m so lucky to call my family.

Vavo, you will be missed by me and so many others.

Rest in peace. Vavo bença. by @alex.leite
