A film critic is a passeur, as Serge Daney famously said. Difficult to translate, the term can refer to a smuggler, a ferryman (real or mythological), or simply someone who passes something on to someone else. It stems from the idea that the film critic stands between two shores: on one side, the films; on the other, the audience. But what happens when the passeur disappears?
Starting from this definition and drawing on his own professional experience, Alessandro Stellino will discuss the role of film criticism in an era that apparently no longer needs it. Is the loss of the film critic’s aura and authority connected to the decline of art as a value in itself in a film world dominated by the rules of the market? And who is really winning if there is no longer an “arbiter” on the playing field?
