Re/Assemble will be on view at PFA–Washington D.C., located at 1932 9 ½ Street NW, Washington D.C., 20001, from September 12 through October 3, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 12, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

I am so excited to be exhibiting a new body of work with Reed Anderson this fall at PFA Gallery in their DC location. I am a longtime fan of Reed’s and am so honored to see our practices in dialogue.

PFA is pleased to announce Re/Assemble, a duo presentation featuring the work of Alex Ebstein and Reed Anderson. Bringing both artists’ practices into direct conversation, the exhibition investigates collage, sites of activity, and artistic intervention through processes of unmaking and reconstitution. Together, Ebstein and Anderson challenge the structural stability of form and material—offering artworks as indexes of gesture, embodiment and reconsideration.

It has been my pleasure to work with Amy Boone-McCreesh this year to curate a thematic group exhibition, Nothing But Net, presented at PFA Gallery’s Kensington location. The exhibition is on view from September 19 through November 28, 2026.

Nothing But Net presents the work of contemporary artists whose practices engage repetition and grid-like structures. Loops, chains, shapes, and color sequences function as key visual motifs across the exhibition. While the grid has long served as a foundational tool in abstraction, the artists in this exhibition expand its application into three dimensions, utilizing both wall and floor to cover surfaces with materials ranging from paper to nylon and ribbon. Nets traditionally function to hold or capture; in basketball, the phrase “nothing but net” celebrates a clean, precise score achieved through skill and practice. Similarly, the artists in this exhibition painstakingly repeat processes—looping, weaving, cutting—embedding labor and duration within each work. Though visually present, nets are not solid; the interplay of negative space, color, volume and scale shapes how a viewer’s body encounters the work and ultimately understands its function.

Bumbray’s multidisciplinary practice channels family history and traditions into meditations on community, memory, and the ritual dimensions of movement. Red Rae, a multimedia artist and performer, imbues their projects with hopeful prompts while examining ideas of perception and transformation through the lens of trans futurity. Hertzler creates hybrid documentary films shaped by her background in psychology, fine arts, and the American South, exploring interpersonal relationships, isolated landscapes, and the symptoms of the climate crisis — works that collapse real and imagined time into a single, haunted frame. Pinkston’s practice explores the intersection of imagined histories and sociopolitical realities on our bodies, using performance, digital media, and mixed-media installations to conjure spaces where architecture, memory, and identity are inseparable. Alex Ebstein is an artist, curator, and the Senior Program Manager of the Rubys Artist Grants.

𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝘁, 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 opens this week at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

For the fair’s second edition, PFA Gallery presents a two-person presentation featuring Alex Ebstein and Ara Koh, bringing together two distinct practices connected by an attention to material, process and transformation. Ebstein’s layered collage works reconsider the boundaries between painting, sculpture and image, while Koh’s ceramic and clay sculptures explore material, structure and memory. Presented in dialogue, their works highlight the ways materials can be cut, layered, shaped and transformed through the process of making.

Re/Assemble brings together Alex Ebstein and Reed Anderson in a dialogue centered on collage, material transformation and artistic intervention. Across distinct but complementary practices, both artists reconsider the stability of form by cutting, recombining and recontextualizing familiar materials. Ebstein transforms industrial and found objects, including yoga mats, craft materials and 3D-printed elements into tactile mixed-media assemblages that explore the body, labor and contemporary ideals of wellness. Anderson works with new and recycled rip-stop nylon, transforming the language of flags, banners and painted geometry into colorful, spatial works that carry both personal and cultural associations. Together, their works invite a reconsideration of the everyday: how materials accumulate meaning, how forms can be unmade and rebuilt and how gestures of cutting, sewing, layering and assembly can become acts of both play and critique.

𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗘𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻’𝘀 practice examines the body, touch and labor through an unconventional approach to material and process. Working with yoga mats, gym equipment and other found or industrial materials, Ebstein cuts, layers and reconfigures familiar surfaces into tactile mixed-media works. Removed from their original function, these materials become sites for considering the physical and psychological demands associated with contemporary wellness culture. In her recent work, the introduction of 3D-printed PLA extends this investigation, bringing digitally produced textures into dialogue with forms shaped and assembled by hand.

This Saturday, September 12, Ebstein’s work will be presented alongside Reed Anderson in 𝙍𝙚/𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙚 at PFA Washington, D.C. Bringing their practices into conversation, the exhibition considers collage, material transformation and the reconstitution of everyday objects through distinct approaches to abstraction.

Tangential Realities – Curator Highlight: Alex Ebstein @alex_ebstein

Alex Ebstein is a Baltimore based artist and curator. She makes mixed media, tactile abstractions using found, readymade, and traditional materials, most notably yoga mats. Her work borrows materials used in gym equipment, yoga, and dance studios, and DIY construction projects to examine the tropes of self-help, wellness, boutique fitness trends, and the white cube. She is the Senior Program Manager for the Ruby Artist Grants, a program of the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation. She previously founded and directed three galleries in Baltimore: Nudashank, Phoebe, and Resort, and ran the galleries at Goucher College from 2018 until 2022. She earned a BA in Studio Arts from Goucher College and an MFA from Towson University. She is represented by Pazo Fine Art in Washington, DC.
