This World Cup has been special. And not just because Spain won it.

Yesterday, the goal that won us the World Cup was watched live by millions. Replayed from twenty angles, in super slow motion, reviewed by VAR, filmed by thousands of phones from the stands. That goal will never be lost.

It’s hard to imagine today, but 67 years ago one of the greatest players in history could walk onto a pitch without anyone filming or photographing him. That match may not have been a World Cup final, but Pelé was going out to work his magic.

On 2 August 1959, Pelé scored the goal he himself called the most beautiful of his career. Only one photographer, who wasn’t supposed to be there, managed to take a few pictures of the moment. But the goal was lost, and for decades it lived only in the memory of those who were there.

Over the past few months I’ve had the luck of working with the team at Google DeepMind to reconstruct it. We pushed AI to its limit with a single obsession: staying faithful to history. We invented nothing. We remembered.

So that this goal, like yesterday’s, is never lost either.

Thank you to @googledeepmind and @google for trusting us with the AI behind a project like this, and congratulations to everyone who brought it all together.

And thank you, above all, to the @specialguestx team: @pepusbc , @jrdi.fr , @klangav and @alexadema @malurodtv @angelgiovannih @jo.biscailuz @miguelvespada. They pulled off what seemed impossible. Congratulations.

The King’s goal can now be seen at the Pelé Museum, in Santos. And also here: goo.gle/pele
