At first glance, it’s just a vintage clothing store. But on any given morning, under a painted mural of Tupac on the ceiling, customers at Nostalgia Vintage Café (@nostalgiavintagecafe) in Somerville might be sipping specialty lattes with coffee by Onyx Coffee Lab (@onyxcoffeelab), eating bowls of cereal, browsing racks of 1990s concert T-shirts, renting a DVD, or inspecting collectors’ items shipped from Japan.Owner Philip Kahan (@therealphillyk), bright-eyed with a wide smile and covered in tattoos, is eager to take just about anyone through his eclectic shop. The atmosphere is “loud,” even with the soft sound of music humming in the background. There’s color everywhere, from a pile of butterfly hair clips and bear-shaped Bearbrick figurines to sneakers on floating shelves and purple neon lights that line the back wall.Kahan, who grew up in Acton as the youngest of seven children, moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, eventually earning a gold-certified single for his songs “Savannah” and “Be Cool.” First he went to Portland to open Highsciety (@vintagebyhighsocietyportland). Now, he’s back in Massachusetts with this latest project. 🔗🔗 Read more by heading to the link in my bio or by going to globe.com/retail. 📸 by Pat Greenhouse of the @bostonglobe staff by @alexagagosz

After founding Feast & Fettle, which has become one of the fastest-growing meal delivery companies in the region, Maggie Mulvena Pearson’s next venture is deliberately small. When Pearson noticed a small ground-floor space in a 1920s yellow house in Barrington, R.I., available for rent, all she saw was a future coffee house. For the past year, she’s hunted for antique Portuguese plates, refinished century-old floors, and designed a 700-square-foot coffee shop in the coastal suburban town along Narragansett Bay. The result is Aldeia Coffeehouse, a Portuguese-inspired café.☕To learn more, please visit the link in our bio. ✍️: Alexa Gagosz📸: Angel Tucker by @alexagagosz

Scoop: Ralph’s Coffee (@ralphscoffee), the coffee café brand by Ralph Lauren, is opening its first Boston cafe today in the Seaport District, following a successful few months of the brand operating a nearby coffee truck. The coffee shop and a brand new Ralph Lauren store, which is also opening today, are part of an ongoing growth strategy for Ralph Lauren, which it announced in September 2025, and Boston was named a key city. The company already operates two other retail stores nearby — one is in the Prudential Center and the other on Newbury Street.🔗 Read more by heading to the link in my bio or by going to globe.com/retail. 📸 by me and courtesy of Ralph Lauren. by @alexagagosz

It was well after 1 a.m. and roughly 100 scantily clad clubgoers snaked down the block outside of Legacy, the LGBTQ+ nightclub in Boston’s Theater District. With about 400 people downstairs, the club had long hit its capacity, but no one seemed eager to give up their place in line.Down Warrenton Street, more crowds spilled onto the sidewalks outside Icon and Venu. IDs were already pulled out. Vape clouds wafted overhead. Groups in stilettos and tight dresses passed around cigarettes before disappearing back onto sweat-soaked dance floors, while others summoned Ubers to chase one more stop before closing time.Normally, Boston nightlife would already be winding down. By 2 a.m., last call is over and the lights come up inside these beat-thumping establishments. But not this summer.Massachusetts temporarily pushed closing times to as late as 3 a.m., if municipalities opted in, through the end of July for World Cup, America 250, and Sail Boston celebrations, allowing nearly 200 bars and restaurants to stay open later. The experiment has boosted sales, filled seats and dance floors, and begun to chip away at Boston’s reputation as a city that shuts down too early. Now, it’s prompting a debate, with some city leaders proposing that the later last call should outlive the summer.🔗Read my latest at globe.com or by heading to the link in my bio.📸: Boston Globe photographers by @alexagagosz

Two decades ago, few New York restaurateurs even considered opening in Boston, a city long viewed as too small and insular for celebrity chefs. Those who did in the early 2010s — Daniel Boulud, David Chang, Mario Batali — ultimately shuttered, reinforcing the perception that Boston wasn’t worth the risk. Now, Boston is emerging as a magnet for big-name restaurateurs eager to expand. In the years since the pandemic, an unprecedented wave of more than a dozen nationally and internationally known hospitality groups have descended on Boston. New York restaurateur @dhmeyer and @ushgnyc already has two restaurants open, with more on the way. Manhattan’s @majorfoodgroup has planted @parm and @contessaristorante. Soon, Dubai’s @lpmrestaurants will debut in Back Bay, as @hawksmoorbos, of London, will open in Fort Point. Canadian chain @cactusclubcafe made Boston their first stop in their expansion plan in the U.S. It’s been so successful that they are looking to add a second location in the city. More are expected to follow. In other words, Boston’s hottest new restaurant already exist elsewhere. One night, ten chefs, and more than a dozen different dishes (including from a welcome raw bar) made up “Family Meal,” a reunion of the Little Donkey team, but at @lemadelinerestaurant in Quincy. A remarkable meal from a legendary crew, who served us Parker house rolls with chicken liver pâté, octopus à la plancha, steak tartare with shrimp chips, spiced lamb bacon with grossed and pickled shallots, fluke crudo that I want to eat everyday with strawberry habanero aquachile and mango pearls, furikaki-crusted halibut and Thai bird mango salsa, wood roasted steak picahna with puréed black eyed peas and green tomato vinaigrette that was certainly a table favorite, eggplant biryani, bok choy, and crispy rice cakes. For dessert: deviled eggs, of all kinds; cookie dough, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse, and pistachio. by @alexagagosz

ICYMI last week: Jacob Wirth, the storied German beer hall that has sat dark for eight years, could reopen as soon as next year, its owners say, in what could be a rare revival for one of Boston’s historic restaurants. After two destructive fires, millions of dollars in damage, and years of uncertainty, the owners of the Stuart Street landmark say they are finally ready to rebuild. They plan to begin construction later this year on a $5.5 million restoration project that could revive the distinctive beer hall that had anchored Boston’s Theater District for more than a century, while also adding five apartments on the building’s upper floors. If all goes according to plan, construction will take at least a year, with Jacob Wirth reopening as soon as late 2027, though it could slip into early 2028, said Jacob Simmons, a vice president for Allston-based City Real Estate Development, one of the owners. The project depends in part on state and federal historic tax credits, which could offset roughly 30 percent of eligible construction costs. It’s a comeback that nearly happened once before.🔗Read my latest in the link in my bio. 📸: Globe Archives, Matthew J. 2025 was one hell of a year for news, and I’m so proud to have earned *six* first place wins from the Rhode Island Press Association, where judges recognized The Food Club as the “Best Food Newsletter,” but also for my coverage of bankrupt Prospect Medical Holdings and its grip on two cash-strapped and struggling hospitals; how some are turning to AI for mental health care; how I dug through records to find that the first oyster bar in Providence was opened by Emmanuel “Manno” Bernoon, who was formerly enslaved (let’s not forget his name again); the idea of appointing a night-life mayor in Providence to revitalize the city’s after-dark economy, and the dark details I uncovered in a triple-murder suicide that happened on a quiet winter night in a tiny town. I’m so grateful for my time in the @rhodeisland bureau of the @bostonglobe, and can’t wait to continue growing as a reporter in Boston, now covering business in the city. It was just a few days ago that the partying mood in Cambridge was high, after the city allowed World Cup fans to stroll in public with a cocktail in hand, a move that finally suggested a more laissez faire attitude in a state known for its restrictions on alcohol. Now for the buzz kill.Cambridge regulators are considering an overhaul of the city’s liquor laws that swing in the opposite direction, tightening the rules so much that restaurant and bar owners warn they could be strangled by the most restrictive drinking codes in the country. The proposed regulations drew little public attention until Lauren Friel (@vin_drop), owner of local wine bar Dear Annie (@dearanniebar), posted an Instagram video walking viewers through a 30-page proposal that would even limit customers to a single drink every half hour.🔗Read the full story in the link in my bio or by heading to globe.com. 📸 by Erin Clark of the @bostonglobe staff.
