A lovely final rehearsal with @oxfordpromusica (for me at least) of Duruflé Requiem and Frank Martin’s Mass last night in Oxford. Great music and a great programme. Lovely to be back with team OPMS for a few rehearsals.

Vaughan Williams was born on this day in 1872. This is 70 seconds of his masterpiece of a cantata Dona nobis pacem (‘Grant us peace’), composed in 1936 as fears were growing in Europe. This is from the second movement, setting Walt Whitman’s poem Beat! Beat! Drums! It’s an extraordinary passage that vividly captures the drums and bugles of war disrupting the peace of the countryside. Listen to how Vaughan Williams builds such tension and momentum as the harmony tears itself apart. It’s very satisfying to play.

The greatest pleasure to accompany superstars 🤩 @hilarycronin8 and @xavierhetherington.tenor at last night’s Gala Dinner for @white_horse_festival at the STUNNING @carvershill estate in Wiltshire.

Some lovely Handel, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, Verdi, Berlioz and Charpentier on the musical menu, with burrata, chicken scarpariello and tiramisu on the amazing dinner menu from chef extraordinaire James Graham of @thebell.ramsbury.

A super evening, masterminded by @juliaelowdon. 🥂👏

And I got to play a stunning Yamaha that today is with Michael McIntyre… 🤯

Happy Birthday to Louis Vierne, born in this day in 1870! 🥂

Blind from birth, Vierne became one of the most important organists and composers in the French organ tradition, writing six amazing organ symphonies that explored the orchestral possibilities of solo organ repertoire, often to thrilling effect.

Here’s a clip of the final movement of Symphony No.1 from one of my many evening solo practice sessions after hours on the organ at King’s College Cambridge during my university years. I think I was playing it for a wedding the following day. I was experimenting with registration and wanted to listen to how my registration behaved in that glorious acoustic.

King’s chapel is such a special place - so peaceful at night and such a calming place to practice, considering it was built over 70 years from 1446! Allegedly Cromwell’s troops practised charging on horseback in there, sheltered from the weather! 🤯

Happy Birthday to George Gershwin, born on this day in 1898! I’ve been dusting off Rhapsody in Blue in preparation for @mkchorale’s concert on 21 February in Milton Keynes. I first learnt it as a teenager; having begun the long process of reworking it, I discover I didn’t really learn it properly in the first place... Does that sound familiar to anyone else? Here’s a snippet of the early stages of my slightly wiser, more accurate, version. Much more to do… Tickets from mkchorale.org! 💙

A super two days working with around 150 young people in three brilliant schools across Leicestershire with the @gabrielicandp team. Huge thanks to @leicsmakemusic for getting us in, and to the fab staff and students we met at Beaumont Leys School, Thomas Estley Community College and @emsmusicdpt. 🤩
