A year ago today, I married the love of my life. When we first started dating nearly 10 years ago, marriage was not legal for people like us. Our relationship was seen as other, and our love somehow unworthy of this beautiful celebration. The vote of one individual on the Supreme Court tipped the scales in our favor. One more voice spoke out for our love than those against it.

As an uncertain future unfolds before us, I ask that if you read this and feel a sense of love, be that ‘one more voice.’ Speak not just for us, but for the kids and young people everywhere that may not see themselves reflected in the world around them. Many brave people from all walks of life came before us making our marriage possible, and many more will come to keep it possible. For that, we are so grateful.

I share our love with you all in the hope that everyone will get the chance to feel what I felt when I looked, through many tears, into Christian’s beautiful, blue eyes on this day as we made our commitment to each other.

In honor of #nationalcomingoutday, here’s a photo captured moments after I came out to two of my best friends all the way back in 2015.

I am so grateful and so blessed to have had a coming out experience that was filled with unwavering love, joy, and acceptance.
