Estoy muy contento de anunciar que mi nuevo corto ‘El Canto de los Años Nuevos’ tendrá su premiere mundial en DocLisboa @doclisboa.iff 💫

‘En la isla de La Gomera un hombre sueña que vuela. Los niños coleccionan sonidos en el bosque e imaginan historias mientras examinan restos arqueológicos. A medio camino entre la etnografía y la ficción, el film propone un viaje a una isla donde el pasado y el presente convergen, generando ecos entre el paisaje volcánico y el silbo gomero, el lenguaje silbado de la isla’

Esta película fue imaginada junto con la gente de La Gomera, contando con la especial colaboración de Tanagua Hernandez Ferrer, Juan Carlos Hernandez Marrero @tagaragunche1968 y las niñas y los niños de segundo de ESO del CEO de Vallehermoso.

I’m very pleased to announce that my short film ‘El Canto de los Años Nuevos’ will have its world premiere in DocLisboa.

‘On the island of La Gomera a man dreams about flying. Children collect sounds in the forest and imagine stories while they examine archeological remains. An ethnofictional journey in which past and present coalesce, creating resonances between the volcanic landscape and Silbo, the whistled language of the island’

The film was imagined together with the people of La Gomera, with the special collaboration of Tanagua Hernandez Ferrer, Juan Carlos Hernández Marrero and the kids from second of ESO of the high school of Vallehermoso. by @alexanderctrigg

We are very happy to share that our film Utkane (Woven) will have its International premiere at the Open City Documentary Festival in London today. Here are a few words written by the festival about the film:

“Woven places us behind the loom of Krystyna-Wojtyna Drouet and on the walks that serve as source material for the expressive, dappled tapestries she weaves there. Versed in natural dyeing methods, her landscape – gilded and lush – becomes her colour palette and the silent witness to the poetry she recites as she traverses it. A member of the Polish School of Textile art, and its last survivor, at 99 she remains deft and assured in her craft but unsure of her memory, paging through photos from decades past, confronted with the passages she no longer recognises”

Following a two-month run in Warsaw as an installation piece—presented as part of a retrospective of Krystyna’s work at the Zachęta Gallery—the film now travels to London. We are proud to have contributed, even in a small way, to making Krystyna’s work more visible, and we look forward to seeing it continue its journey.

▭ Ciro, artzain bat, basozainengandik ihesi doa bere artaldea atzean utzita. Garajonayko gauaren atarian, mendiaren sakonean lanak egiten dituzten hainbat pertsonaiarekin bizi da: emakume talde batek txilar zatiak biltzen ditu isilean, etxeak berotzeko, eta gizonek enborrak moztu eta adarrak jasotzen dituzte, forma obalatua hartzen ari den ikaztegi batean pilatuta. Horien artean, Gomerako txistua zabaltzen da abisu eta komunikazio kode gisa, basozainen presentzia eta kokalekua ohartaraziz.

▭ Ciro, un pastor, huye de los guardamontes dejando atrás a su rebaño. Bajo el umbral de la noche del Garajonay, convive con una serie de personajes que realizan tareas en lo profundo del monte: un grupo de mujeres recolecta sigilosamente trozos de brezo para calentar sus hogares y unos hombres cortan troncos y recogen ramas, amontonándolas en una carbonera que va tomando una forma ovalada. Entre ellos, el silbo gomero se despliega como código de alerta y comunicación, avisando de la presencia y localización de los guardamontes.

Some snippets of my visual and written contribution for Cartography magazine, where I share my impressions of my first trip to La Gomera. The piece reflects on my initial encounters with the island and its people, the landscape, archaeological sites, the gestuality of silbo gomero, a trip to the Cumbre Vieja volcano, and more.

A couple of years ago, I filmed a series of portraits in 16mm of several people from La Gomera using the “silbo gomero,” the whistled language of the island. Along with Jose Miguel Trujillo, an anthropologist from the island, we visited the older generation to understand the diversity of gestural and expressive forms of the silbo. I also filmed a series of portraits of kids of the high school of Vallehermoso who nowadays learn to whistle in class.

Hace un par de años, filmé una serie de retratos en 16mm de varias personas de La Gomera utilizando el silbo gomero, el lenguaje silbado de la isla. Junto con José Miguel Trujillo, antropólogo de la isla, visitamos a miembros de la generación mayor para explorar la diversidad de formas gestuales y expresivas del silbo. También filmé una serie de retratos de los niños y niñas del instituto de Vallehermoso, quienes hoy en día aprenden a silbar en clase.
