MEET OUR FELLOW: Alexandru Gavriel Ganea ✨

Alexandru Gavriel Ganea (born 1990, Jerusalem) is a sculptor living and working in Berlin, Germany and Carrara, Italy. He holds a Masterʼs degree in Fine Arts which he acquired at the Weissensee Academy of Fine arts and Design in Berlin, under the guidance of Prof. Else Gabriel.
Ganea works predominantly with marble and wood, creating sculptures that explore tension, duality and spatial relationships. His practice is guided by an intuitive, material led process; allowing the natural ow of the material to shape each form.
Ganea focuses on creating work that emerges from within, drawing on emotion, as well as the relationships between humans, materials, and forms. Beginning with self- observation and his immediate surroundings, he aims to create works that exist between modernist heritage and the contemporary
expression.

Pathos Of Things

Charred oak, blued steel

Object 1: 129 x 24 x 23.5 cm
Object 2: 121 x 44 x 24 cm

A while ago, I got a cut from an oak tree in Austria. The shape was very specific, strong and dominant, tall, pointing upward, almost aggressive at times. It was such a distinct form that I didn’t really know what to do with it, but it caught my eye and I felt that something interesting can come out of it.

Around that time I was working on another project that, in practice, dealt with splitting a whole in half, and the idea came to do the same with this piece of oak.

At the time I was thinking a lot about people you share a period of your life with, relationships that feel absolute for a while, and then life happens, and you go in different directions. I found myself having many of these people in my life, and I started calling them “friends for a season”, which might sounds derogatory, but it is really the opposite, these are people that had a great impact on my life and will stay with me forever in the form of memories and love. Thinking about these “friends for a season” also led me to reflect on things I used to do as a child or adolescent, and how I spent my time. Things I did like hobbies I had that simply stopped. It’s strange, because there was an exact moment that was the last time I did something I did many times before, but this time it was the last and I wasn’t aware of it. Time passes, and then it hits you, it’s been a while, maybe even years since ive done this thing.

While doing some research, exploring this illusive, somewhat melancholic feeling, I came across a Japanese aesthetic and philosophical concept called mono no aware, which roughly translates to “the pathos of things.”

Of Beginning and End is a site specific installation I created when finishing my master’s degree. It differs from my usual, more refined practice. Certain limitations had to be taken into consideration, which ultimately pushed me to create a far more minimalist artwork.
The act of taking a whole and splitting it is a fascinating process, and this work led me in a new direction of research and creation, one that will become more evident in some of my future works. taken in Wilhelm Hallen by @alexanderganea

Last week, after 8 years and two degrees, I finally parted ways with @kunsthochschuleberlin and its sculpture department @khb_bildhauerei , and now I am a master of art.
Enclosing this chapter made me look back at the process ive made from the days I just moved to Berlin and made a portfolio to apply for the academy, different works throughout the years that ive made, and all the way to the present to my final presentation where I showed a site specific installation titled “Of Beginning and End”, my most minimal work to date and probably also my most romantic one so far.
It has been quite a journey from not doing arts at all to where I am today, and im really proud of myself.
Big thanks to all the amazing people ive met, it was an absolute pleasure and honor.

Untitled Wood Work,

Oak
970x230x190

This is my only untitled work to date.
For a while, I named it Brothers. I see something in it that makes me think of him and me and us growing up going in different directions, staying kind of the same, but also not really.
The name never fit the feeling completely though- so it’s untitled again.

Bronze, 40*30*5

This is the second relief in a series and ongoing research into the surfaces and textures of walls. I find the decisions behind the finishing of walls fascinating. Textured walls can hold memories and provoke associations; they feel like silent observers of their surroundings, carrying information and emotion.

Carrara, a place very close to my heart, a place that definitely shaped me as a sculptor and as a human.
We, Carrara and I, are a bit different each year, and according to that also the body of work I produce is fresh and new to me each time im there. All that is a part of a natural evolution we are going through, and I love it.
So thank you Carrara and most importantly thank you @alnassarsculpture for everything you have given and taught me, and of course all of the wonderful people I’ve met there, who made this time so priceless ❤️

If you’ve made it this far in the text heres a treat for ya, Friday the 18th from 18:00 (yes in two days) is the Vernissage of the exhibition “Gute Gesellschaft“, in which I will be showing my master studies project- a site specific installation for the event. The exhibition will be at @wilhelmhallen and will be open till the 28th with a group of incredible artists. by @alexanderganea
