On Tuesday night I found out my grandpa passed away while I was teaching. My grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s years back and it’s been a painful slow goodbye.

Every summer my grandparents would take me camping in beautiful Oregon. He taught me how to make a bonfire, showed me hiking, and one of my favorite memories was collecting shells on the beach with him. He was a classy gentlemen who loved Johnny Cash and was married to my grandma for 67 years. She was the apple of his eye and he would do anything for her. He called her his Carol Sue. He passed peacefully to my dad playing Johnny cash on the guitar for him while my grandma was proclaiming her love to him. He then got enough strength to blow her one last final kiss and his spirit left us.

My grandpa loved sea shells. During camp, he would wake us up at 6am to collect shells on the Oregon coast. I wanted to give him one final gift before he left… sea shells that I collected the weekend before. I brought him shells Tuesday morning. He couldn’t talk anymore, but I knew he felt it and knew what it was. I put the shells to his ears and told him how much I love him. My grandpa couldn’t move, but I saw tears coming out of his eyes.

My love for shells is because of you.

Thank you for being such a light in my life. Thank you for all the memories you gave me. Grandpa I love you and you will forever be with me in my heart 🤍🌲🐚
