Almost exactly 15 years after my accident I was at the same event, this time invited to sit on a panel next to two of the industry’s most respected heavy hitters to talk about the chocolate shop I opened with the damages.En route I took silly fun house selfies in the elevator with the cute guy that I met at the same event, nine years earlier. And after, as always, I drank drinks, ate food and devoured stories with the same hooligans who have heckled, humbled and hugged me every step of that very wild ride. by @alexandwich

“People give you things” is a thought that keeps surfacing in my brain. It seems obvious, but I hadn’t fully appreciated how massive some gifts are — and how often both the giver and recipient often have no idea of the colossal impact any given moment might have. As a tween, a group of young, independently awesome female teachers gave me something: A framework for loving and supporting a circle of women who were all coming from (and going to) very different places. They modeled fun, respect, and a “we can do hard things” energy long before it had a brand. Absorbing that gift has given me soft landings, silver linings, and jackets to borrow from teams of honest assessors who conclude it’s not necessary while still readily lending because we were all just laughing so hard that I was personally convinced that perhaps, actually I did (and my potentially inaccurate feelings matter to them). That gift started its orbit when my friend Lindsay from @inklingspaperie called me on stage with words that were an honor and spoke directly to the impact that gift has had on my business and the way I do business. She saw it and she “got it” - as in not just understood it but actually received that same gift from the same people! Yes, my friend is a friend of those friends!When it came to this year’s Spring Collection, “Made from Scratch” we knew that we had written a love letter not necessarily to our moms but to people who had mothered us and women who had mentored us. It was close to the chest so we thought, “How could we possibly find anyone to work with that could meet us where we’re at on this one?”. In that moment, it came full circle because, of course, we already had! And, the rest is history.(Unfortunately it’s actual history - the collection sold out quick!
