Let me tell you about Alex Clark. He’s a visual artist living in New Orleans, and he painted the piece you see a print of here: The Flight of Simon Magus. I found Clark’s work, and this painting in particular, when researching depictions of Simon Magus’s death. Simon, if you don’t know, is a minor character in the Christian Bible; also the figure that Simon’s Sorrow, the fictional cult featured in my novel MOTHER-EATING, worships.

After finding Clark’s painting, I reached out to him about procuring prints. I wanted to gift them to the booksellers and conversation partners who hosted or joined me on the M-E book tour. It just so happened I was headed to New Orleans in October. There, I got to meet Clark and pick up my signed prints in person. He was gracious and tried to give them to me for free, but I was adamant. All artists deserve to be paid for their work. Writers, too.

I did keep one of the prints for myself, and it sits on a picture rail in my office. It reminds me that while the creative life is hard sometimes, the act of creating connects people in unexpected ways. I didn’t know who Alex Clark was before I wrote MOTHER-EATING, but his work now hangs in bookstores and homes across Texas, Missouri, and Wisconsin, and I think that’s pretty cool. Thanks for believing I wasn’t a bot when I cold-contacted you, @alexclark573 ❤️

‘Storyville’ is now on view at Wine Art Gallery on Julia St. An image of the oldest New Orleans building still standing. Originally a bar, and more recently a grocery, it’s In rough shape now, but is moving toward a planned renovation by the city. It was a legally regulated red-light district, operating from 1897 to 1917. It played a major role in the development of jazz. It was shut down by the federal government in 1917, and razed in the late 1930’s. Oil on canvas, 22” sq. by @alexclark573

Many years ago, after moving to the ‘buckle of the Bible Belt’, Charlotte, NC, I began a series of paintings on ‘problems with religion’. This is a notebook drawing that I thought too harsh, and never used. I like the drawing though. It illustrates Psalm 137, which gives a blessing to those who would destroy Babylon. It ends with a horrific image of dashing oppressor’s infants against rocks. A contemporary analogy might be the bombing of a girls elementary school. Colored pen, 4” sq. by @alexclark573
