Portraying the transvestite trans community in Buenos Aires is also talking about migration. Joy, Yaya and Vettania are transvestite trans women from Colombia who found their home in Argentina. Although they come from different parts of the country and migrated in different years, the reasons why they did so are the same: violence, lack of opportunities, discrimination and segregation as a result of a deeply sexist society.

In addition to geographical limits, they also went beyond the limits of a society linked to a strong Catholic and conservative tradition. Despite some progress in terms of rights, Colombia is the second country in the region with the most cases of violence against trans people, registering the highest number of homicides, ranking only below Brazil. In June of this year, the Colombian Congress archived for the second consecutive time the bill that sought to prohibit conversion therapies. These data are worrying considering that the life expectancy of a transgender woman is 35 years and more than 50% of the LGTBIQ+ population experiences mental health problems.

All three agree that migrating gave them the opportunity to have a new life. In their native country, the reality of sexual diversity and dissidence is far from the rights achieved in Argentina, rights that are also beginning to be threatened today. Those of us who live in this territory know that there is still much to do, but it is also necessary to know that everything that has been gained must be protected and defended with the same or greater force than those who preceded us and made Argentina an example for the progress achieved in the region.

Portraying them is celebrating their existence and their stories, it is also redefining freedom.

A little update… ✨

As many of you know, the salon that I worked unexpectedly closed, and life has been shifting a little lately.

For now, you can find me in Bushwick at Sanctuary Salon, and I’m so grateful they’ve opened their doors to me while something new is cooking behind the scenes. 👀

Goodbye, WhiteRoom Salon. 🤍

For five years, WhiteRoom was my home. It was a place where, with something as simple as a haircut, I had the privilege of bringing happiness to so many clients who sat in my chair. Five years filled with laughter, memories, conversations, and unforgettable experiences.

Today, I say goodbye to WhiteRoom, but not to what I love most. I’m continuing to do what I’m most passionate about, and I’m incredibly excited to begin a new chapter alongside an amazing team.

Thank you, WhiteRoom, for everything. And most importantly, thank you to all of my wonderful clients who have supported me, trusted me, and shared this journey with me. I hope to see you all very soon. 🤍
