A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of getting to visit family in Chicago, and I had the honor of surprising her with a sweet little arrangement.

I didn’t know she was taking these videos, and it’s really my first time seeing me ā€œdo the workā€ but as I watch this I’m reminded of why I do it. Taking the time to find a local spot to source flowers. Arranging something beautiful and fresh, something that will fade but gives someone enough time to know they are loved and seen - oh, how I hope this feeling never gets old.

Another first of the month and it’s typically when I repost a few of my favorite snaps of my favorite places and people, but this month felt HEAVY.

I was reminded again that being able to feel happy in a world that is not designed for you, is such a privilege I now no longer lightly.

You see, these stories hit home because either of them could have been me. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been the only person of color, or the only woman in a room. I’ve had to report a peer for feeling up my skirt. I’ve dated people that ā€œweren’t ready for this (a person of color) for their familyā€. I’ve had people I thought were friends do nothing to support me when I was called the n-word (on numerous occasions).

The world is tough, and circumstances make some of us grow up faster than intended and much stronger than we really want to be.

October I hope you bring justice. I hope you bring accountability, and I hope you bring hope. šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤ by @alexfurr4

Turns out, arranging flowers starts long before you actually arrange the flowers.

There’s sourcing, processing, trimming, cleaning, hydrating, organizing… and waiting.

Which feels particularly triggering when you just brought home a bunch of pretty flowers and immediately want to start creating.

But I’m learning to appreciate this part too…

Because you don’t get to skip the foundation just because you’re excited about the outcome.

And I have a feeling that’s going to be a theme around here.

Sure, I’m learning flowers. But I’m also learning what it actually looks like to take something you love doing and build a business around it.

Why things cost what they cost. Where to source. What happens when flowers don’t cooperate. Business bank accounts. Separate expenses. Pricing my own time. Systems. Processes. All the incredibly unsexy things that have to exist behind the pretty things.

I’ve spent years thinking about operations and financial processes for other businesses. Getting to apply some of that knowledge {and realize how much I still have to learn} while building something of my own feels really freaking cool.

So yes, there will be pretty flowers here. But I’m also going to show you what I’m learning while I figure out how to build the thing that makes the pretty flowers possible.

For tonight, these little cuties will rest.
And soon enough, creating will begin šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤

Turns out building something means you have to be a little vulnerable and let people see what you’re building…

Which is equal parts exciting and mildly terrifying. šŸ™ƒ

But your girl has been working on some fun stuff - so, here we are, looking at what Intentional Arrangements is becoming. Here’s to learning, arranging, changing my mind, moving a stem 14 times and figuring it out as I go.

And a small little reminder to take care of yourself friends, you’re the only one who can šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤

DMs are open for ordering (earliest delivery Oct 12th)

Posting a POV of another business is probably a very unconventional first post for a floral business, but, it feels pretty fitting.

There was something really special about sourcing flowers from a place like Steve’s Flower Market (@stevesflowermarket) for a loved one, and seeing what someone else has built - especially when you’re at the very beginning of starting something special on your own.

It was inspiring. A little intimidating. And also this quiet reminder that everybody who has ā€œfigured it outā€ was once standing at the beginning too.

So, cheers to the people and places that make the rest of us think, wait… maybe I could actually do this.

And cheers to Chicago, because somewhere between wandering the flower market, getting drenched at a touchdown-less Bears game, and dreaming about what Intentional Arrangements could become…

I booked my first client. šŸ„¹šŸ’

Turns out manifestation looks a lot like inspiration + action + being willing to start before you know exactly where it’s going.

Here’s to the beginning. šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤

And since we’re officially beginning…

I’m opening up orders for October 12–31. If you have something coming up, want flowers for someone you love, or just want something beautiful because you can buy yourself flowers - DM me and let’s dream something up.

I’ll be sharing more of my work this week, because your girl has got to figure out what ordering, pricing, and working with Intentional Arrangements will actually look like long term. #itsfine

For NOW, consider the DMs officially open. šŸ’ taken in Frisco, Texas by @alexfurr4

Turns out, your girl asks a lot of questions.

Not because I need to be the smartest person in the room. And usually not because I’ve already decided something is wrong.

My brain just really likes to understand how the pieces connect, it always has.

Why are we doing this?
What are we actually trying to accomplish?
What information am I missing?
Does this still make sense?

And I’ve learned that asking those questions requires a little relational intelligence.

How I ask matters. The timing matters. My tone matters. Context matters. Knowing the energy of the room matters.

But how we receive questions matters too. {this one is HARD}

Because when curiosity is consistently interpreted as criticism, eventually people stop being curious out loud… they start assuming.

And assumptions can get really expensive, really fast.

I’m also learning that sometimes there’s just no perfectly comfortable way to ask the question that needs to be asked.

Yes, you might create five awkward minutes.

You might have to sit in someone else’s discomfort.

You might even have to sit in your own.

But I’d rather do that than spend five weeks confidently moving in different directions because everyone was too uncomfortable to ask for clarity.

So yeah, I’m probably going to ask the question…

But what do I know?šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤

I’m learning that wanting more doesn’t have to mean something is wrong with what I already have.

You can be proud, and still growing. Content, and still curious. Grateful, and still wondering what’s next.

And maybe we don’t have to choose nearly as often as we think we do… maybe we just have to get a little better at sitting in the discomfort of the and.

Because two things being true at the same time can feel messy, like incredibly messy.

It can make you question whether you’re grateful enough. Whether you’re asking for too much. Whether wanting something different means you’ve somehow outgrown, or stopped appreciating, what you already have.

But discomfort doesn’t always mean something is wrong.

Sometimes it just means you’re making room for a truth that’s a little more complicated than the one you had before.

You can love this life and still be curious about what’s next.

I think I’m learning to make room for bothšŸ¤ŽšŸ¤ by @alexfurr4

I’ve never been particularly good at fitting into anyone else’s box.

Sometimes that’s worked out really well for me. Sometimes… not so much.

But I think part of living an authentic life is making enough space to actually figure out what that means for you.

What do I like?
What feels like me?
What actually doesn’t anymore?
What have I learned about recently? Anything about myself?
And maybe most importantly… what am I going to do with that information?

Because reflection is great, but eventually you have to let what you learn change the way you live.

Maybe that means changing something big.
Maybe it means buying the flowers, finding a new hobby, protecting an hour of your weekend, or following a curiosity you can’t quite explain yet.

March to the beat of your own drum, friends. Be a little hard to put in a box.

You’re the one who has to live your life. Might as well make sure it feels like yours. šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤ by @alexfurr4

Four-day work weeks really have a way of being six days long.

But we made it, fam.

Whatever did not get done can be next week’s problem. Log off, go do something that makes you feel like a person again, and refill your cup.

Because, respectfully, Monday is coming whether we recharge or not.

Happy Friday, friends. šŸ¤ŽšŸ¤
