In February, I had the pleasure of joining a VOMA field exercise in the mountains of Lori region for a few days.

Due to Armenia’s unique geopolitical position as a country sandwiched between two perpetual enemies and frequently incurred upon by said powers, it has become the vocation for the leaders of VOMA to make sure that Armenia’s civilian population are capable soldiers, in the event that the population needs to be mobilised in the future. Something that is not a far cry when considering the country’s last 30 years of staggered conflict over Nagorno-karabakh, and its broader history of invasion and occupation spanning almost 2000 years.
Most men in Armenia will do a period of national service in the military, VOMA seeks to maintain and develop that experience through weekly meetings, camps, field exercises and workshops. This skillset is then also opened up to the rest of the population, including members of the Armenian diaspora who return to Armenia to attend training camps, something that has seen increased popularity since the 2020 war. The idea, as it was explained to me, is to build a national reserve similar to Finland, whereby as much of the population as possible has a relatively well maintained skill level as it pertains to combat readiness.
Current events have meant that politicians pushing for appeasement of Armenia’s hostile neighbours, have put pressure on groups like VOMA, calling for their disbandment or evening labelling them as terrorists, stating that there is no need for such organisations as they are at “peace”, and intend to be going forward. However, as was stated to be by the founder of VOMA, this is considered a “fake peace” by many Armenians as the settlement reached only takes into account the requests of the aggressor.
I’m not a journalist so don’t really care about impartiality - Anyone who spends 5 minutes with the leadership of VOMA will be able to see that these negative claims are blatantly false. At its heart it’s serving a vital purpose, and functions with complete transparency. taken in Lori Region by @alexgfmch
