In 2018 in Qalandia refugee camp in Ramallah, a frontline of the West Bank conflict, 12 year old Nada had an idea for a short film - a surreal reimagining of the nine meter high, 708km long wall that Israel built around the West Bank in 2002. The resulting short, ‘Wall Piano’, takes us into the daydream of a child who lives under the shadow of a separation wall, showing the wall as something other than a brutal and immovable barrier.

The film arose from a series of workshops with artists Asma Ghanem (Palestine), Christopher Marianetti (USA), Alexia Webster (South Africa) and a group of children living in the long-standing refugee camp. As Asma Ghanem reflects, “I think what is important about the project is that for these kids the whole concept of this powerful wall that is controlling their lives, out of nowhere, it becomes something else. The very definition of the wall passes through their imagination in a different way.”

A special thanks to all who contributed and supported this artistic work, especially the participating children Nada, Belques, Rama, Muhammad, Ahmad, and their parents.

One year ago I spent 6 wild weeks aboard the Ocean Viking on the Mediterranean Sea, a ship chartered by @ifrc and @sosmediterranee Over almost 2 months we patrolled this unearthly realm, looking for shipwrecked people stuck in a limbo between their past and their dreams of their future. Many thousands of souls have been lost forever out there.

During the trip we were able to rescue a group of 114 migrants that had fled Libya to try each Europe, most of them young refugees from the conflict in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

I recently worked on a podcast about the voyage with @malcolmlucardmusic for the @ifrc who allowed me the amazing opportunity to go on the journey. In the podcast we speak about my experiences at sea and share interviews with the incredible crew and survivors. Farewell to our dearest friend Chakib who brought us to the desert and let us dance among the dunes.
The most recent weeks I spent with him were a profound lesson in love, courage, grace and in what it means to truly live in the light.

I recently discovered a lost roll of unprocessed film in an old camera bag and when i developed it I found these, treasures of forgotten images... of my brilliant cousin in the mist forest and our family home which holds at least a few our ancestors.

I headed into the mountains a few moons ago to make a video for this beautiful new song by @briarsofnorthamerica . Working on this was a meditation, a slow unfolding.

Last year, when the pandemic suddenly seized the world, I was in Madagascar in a tiny village at the edge of the rainforest.
We had no electricity so we would have to walk to a little hill outside of the village and stand under the canopy of the Milky Way to pick up reception and get updates on what was happening in the cities. The reality of it all; borders closing, flights stopping, cities grinding to a halt; seemed all the more absurd and unreal while surrounded by a soundtrack of lemurs and chickens.

We haven’t been able to go back yet to finish the project, but some nights when the city feels a little too tight around me, I go onto the roof of my building and look up into the empty sky and remember that there is blanket of billions of stars that quietly covers us all.
