Under a Maya pyramid, archaeologists found a lake of liquid mercury that stayed sealed for 1,800 years. The plaque in the museum hall gives it one tidy line: a ritual mirror.

Our guide, Ernesto, gave us a different one. My brother Wes called it symbolism. I said nobody seals liquid metal under a pyramid for poetry.

Here is what stuck with me: the stone rim of that basin is worn down in two smooth dips, right where a man’s knees go. The plaque has a word for the men who knelt there the longest. It doesn’t say what became of them.

I walked out of that hall with a question I can’t shake, and I’m pretty sure you have the answer sitting closer to you than you’d like.

Swipe through and tell me who you think had it right, me or Wes.

Ohio, 1962. A four-year-old girl sits at the kitchen table and talks about a house she has never lived in, a dog she never owned and a father nobody in the room has met. A scientist drives out to settle it in one evening.

He had a smart, sensible answer ready. Most of us would have had the same one.

What he wrote in his notebook that night is the part that stays with you. And the part about my own son is the one I did not plan to share.

If you have ever laughed at something a kid said, this one is for you. Swipe through to the last slide, and notice how you feel when you get there.

Save it for the next time a little one tells you something that makes no sense.

What’s growing by your mailbox right now? Not “some weeds.” Its real name.

Five generations of my family could answer that without thinking twice. I’m the first one who can’t.

Everybody assumes a book like this goes missing because somebody wants it gone. The real reason is more boring than that, and a lot harder to fix.

And it has nothing to do with the words or drawings printed on the pages.

Swipe through for where this book really went, and the one thing I’m asking you to do this week.

Save this for the next time you walk past your own back steps.

Two days before closing on our first house, I had $60,000 typed into my banking app and my thumb over “Send.” Thirty more seconds, and our down payment would be gone.

The email looked right. Same title company logo, same signature from Linda, our closing agent in Charlotte, same file number. Subject line: “URGENT: updated wiring instructions.” The money had to land by noon or closing would slip. Brooke was seven months pregnant, and our lease ran out on the 31st.

Six years of savings sat in that transfer. The bank texted me a code, and I typed it in. Then I remembered what Linda told us on the first call: “We will never change wiring instructions by email.”

I called the number printed on our purchase contract. Linda picked up. “We didn’t send anything.” Somebody had been reading our emails for weeks and waited for the biggest number.

A card charge you can dispute. A wire leaves in minutes, and once it lands in a thief’s account, banks rarely get it back. The FBI has warned home buyers for years. Men like me think it happens to grandpas. I lift four days a week and almost handed a nursery to a guy behind a keyboard.

What we do now:

Get the wiring phone number on day one, in person or from the contract. Before any wire, call that number and have them read the account number back to you.

Read the sender address letter by letter. Ours said “titIe” with a capital I in place of the l. On a phone screen they look identical.

Treat urgency as the alarm. When an email says “today or it’s off,” call your closing agent first.

Make a house rule: any wire over $1,000 needs both of you on the call. Ours sits on a sticky note on the fridge.

Scammers don’t rush you because they’re busy. They rush you because one phone call ends the whole plan.

...

Tag the couple closing on a house this year.

Rice paper is the whole trick. Two wet sheets fold around ground turkey, a hot pan does the rest, and the crust cracks like fried dough with zero dough inside.

I cut weight twice a year for jiu-jitsu tournaments in Boise. Weekends used to break me. Pizza for the kids, wings for my wife, and me with plain chicken and rice, hating everybody. By Sunday I was at the gas station buying anything with a crust.

That habit costs more than a weekend. Five rounds of “I’ll start over Monday” and the cut is gone, the tournament is three weeks out, and I step on the scale scared. My boys watched their dad lose that fight to a pizza box. That part I couldn’t live with.

For two pies: 7 oz ground turkey, half a small onion, 4 sheets of rice paper, 1 egg yolk, 2 tsp sesame seeds, salt and pepper. Both pies together: 451 calories, 47 g protein, 11 g fat, 36 g carbs.

Grate the onion straight into the turkey. Chopped onion leaves the filling dry. Grated onion gives you the juice a good empanada is famous for.

Stack two sheets of rice paper while they’re wet. One sheet tears in the pan. Two sheets fry up into a crust you can hold in one hand.

Spread the filling thin, on one half only, then fold into a half-moon and press the edge with a fork. Thin is the rule. A fat filling stays raw in the middle while the crust burns.

Brush the top with yolk, shake on the sesame and cook in a dry nonstick pan over medium heat, 5 to 6 minutes a side. Check the center with a thermometer: 165°F means done.

My 7-year-old calls them “crunchy moons” and finishes his before mine leaves the pan. Last month I made weight with two pounds to spare and ate pie every weekend of the cut.

Ban everything you love, and the diet lasts until the weekend. Put your cravings in a better uniform, and they fight on your side.

...

Save this for your next cheat night.

Kubrick spent his last years filming a mansion where money buys people instead of things. Six days after he showed the final cut, he was dead.

The movie is Eyes Wide Shut, 1999. It came from a 1926 novella, written 72 years before Epstein bought his island. On March 1, Kubrick screened the finished film for his stars and the studio. On March 7, he died in his sleep at 70. Official cause: heart attack. His family has called it natural for 27 years. The internet keeps asking.

He shot it for 400 days, a Guinness record for the longest continuous film shoot. The man hid from cameras his whole life. Then he put masks, candles and the rich on screen in more detail than any director before him. American theaters got the o*gy scene hidden behind digital figures.

The line everyone remembers belongs to Ziegler, the host: “If I told you their names, I don’t think you’d sleep so well.” The pianist who played that party blindfolded gets a warning. Leave town. Keep quiet.

I can’t prove what killed Kubrick, and I don’t need to. Ziegler’s world runs on one rule: every man has a price, and a man learns his only when somebody names it.

Name yours first. Write down three things you won’t do for any amount of money. Mine sit in my phone notes, and I reread them before every contract I sign.

Watch how a rich man treats the waitress. Power shows its real face to people it doesn’t need. I walked away from a deal after a client snapped his fingers at our waitress.

When a room asks for your silence before it tells you anything, leave the room. The pianist knew the rules and went anyway.

My daughter is 9. Offer her something free, and she asks: “What do you want back?”

Kubrick kept his eyes open and showed us a room most men walk into with theirs shut.

...

Comment “PRICE” if you’ve decided yours.

Every morning for two years I washed down nine capsules with my coffee. Probiotics, greens, collagen, fish oil the size of a grape. $140 a month on autopay. By 3 p.m. my stomach looked like I’d swallowed a basketball.

I coach high school wrestling in Tampa. My wrestlers run sprints after every practice, and their coach was the guy unbuttoning his jeans in the coaches’ office after lunch. In March my wife Megan found the receipts: $3,360. She asked one question: “Has anyone checked what’s going on in there?”

Nobody had. The supplement brand never asks. The guy with the discount code never asks. When a bottle fails, the next ad sells you a stronger one.

The money scared me less than my son. He’s 4, and one morning I caught him lining up my capsules next to his cereal like candy. For two years I had treated a warning sign as a shopping list, and he was learning it from me. I’ll tape a split finger and finish a match, but I ignored my own stomach because it hurt quietly.

What I changed, in this order:

Cancel the autopay first. Nothing new goes in until somebody qualified tells you what’s wrong. I canceled three subscriptions in one evening, and the first month covered my doctor visit.

Keep a notebook for two weeks. What you ate, when the bloating hit, how you slept, what stressed you. My gastroenterologist read it in four minutes and asked better questions than any label. Six months later my jeans button after lunch.

Ask the doctor what comes first. “What do we calm down first, and what do we build after?” Guys walk in asking which probiotic to buy, and that question skips step one.

Putting a supplement on an inflamed gut is like waxing a car with the check engine light on. Fix the engine. The shine can wait.

...

Send this to your brother with a cabinet full of capsules.

A Russian brain doctor said something a century ago that still sounds too wild to be true: a mind has no walls. Other people walk in and leave their thoughts behind, and you never hear the door.

I found out the hard way, in a car lot, with a printed list in my hand and a number I was sure I would never cross. Weeks later a friend asked me one simple question at work, and my answer did not sound like me.

If you think nobody gets in your head, this one is aimed at you. Swipe through and ask yourself one thing: where did your last strong opinion come from?

Year seven. Our bedroom door hasn’t closed in a long time, and I never noticed the day it stopped.

Every couple I know shrugs and says it’s normal. Two kids, a mortgage, welcome to marriage. I said it too, for years, and it sounded so reasonable that nobody ever pushed back.

Then a friend asked me one simple question, and I had no answer. It wasn’t about money, or the kids, or who does the dishes.

If you’ve ever wondered where the spark went and blamed your schedule, this story might sting a little. Swipe through to see what my buddy Dan has been doing every night for twelve years, and what changed in our house within three weeks.

Save this one for the night you can’t stop thinking about it.

Two women, both 45, walked into the same reunion. One looked 35. The other looked 55.

One husband had a theory ready. Genes, creams, bad luck. I caught myself agreeing with one of the husbands.

Then I watched their husbands, and the theory stopped making sense.

If you’re married, this story is about you, because the answer isn’t where most men look.

Swipe through before you decide what’s really going on with her face. One small detail from the husbands is easy to miss.

Save this for the next time you walk past your wife in the hallway.

For ten years I prayed for a softer wife. I thought I knew exactly what I was asking God for.

Two women were in my life back then. One asked too many questions. The other never asked anything, and I took that as a sign.

I had a slogan, a theory and a secret contact in my phone saved as “Tony Plumbing.” What I didn’t have was an honest answer to one simple question.

In April it all came due, and the answer came from the person I’d been avoiding for a decade.

If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking “it shouldn’t be this hard,” swipe through. The last slides hold one question worth asking yourself.

Save this one for the next time you start picturing an easier life.

Everyone in his family had the same word for it. They were all wrong, and I was the loudest one in the room.

He quit sleeping, quit Sunday dinners and quit answering the phone. For six months we said “he’ll snap out of it,” and for six months nothing moved.

Then, in March, my brother told me why. The answer was simpler than I expected, and it changed what I do when someone I love goes quiet.

Swipe through to see what he said, and what finally worked.

Save this one for the day someone in your life goes dark. You’ll want it, and so will the people around him.
