Behold! I too, have created a Substack (finally). Maybe this will just be home for my inner thoughts that would have been just as beneficial to journal, but I thought others would enjoy some stories I have to tell.

I don’t even like highball boulders, much less soloing anything, but I DO love chimney climbing, so it made sense for Cavers Route. Rob has been wanting to take me on this for ages so it was a great little side venture ☺️

Two men stand outside the cave where Hussein al Houthi was killed in 2004; central government forces were firing from the village in the distance. Saada, 2013.
•
As the Believing Youth movement grew, so did the discontent between rural Saada and central government Sanaa. With the advent of the American invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, the Houthis, like many other regional movements, morphed from social, to socio-religious, to sociopolitical in their aims.
•
By 2004, the Believing Youth had adopted anti-American and anti-Israeli slogans in response to American hegemony. I wish I could explain more here, but it would truly take hundreds of words.
•
By 2004 the central government under Ali Abdullah Salah had grown tired. He waged war on all those who supported Hussein al Houthi, in a viscous mountain campaign, supported by weapons from Saudi Arabia, and by proxy, the United States.

Hussein al Bukayti stands in front of a memorial to war martyrs in the northern province of Sa’ada, Yemen - 2013.
•
The Houthis began not as an armed group, but as a social advocacy group called the Believing Youth, starting in 1992 in Sa’ada. In the early 1990s, Yemen was a new unified nation, still trying to find its way post-1990 unification between the South and North. The Believing Youth expanded outreach to summer camps to promote a Zaydi* revival.
•
At this time, much of the rest of the middle east was experiencing a fracturing, post-Salafi revival spurred on by the aftershocks of the Gulf War. In the background of growing extremism elsewhere, the Believing Youth slowly grew, expanding in purpose and toward socio-political cause, drawing more attention to their rural governorate, which rarely received support from the centralized government in Sana’a.
•
* Zaydi Islam is indeed a Shia denomination, but one that is almost exclusively unique to Yemen, in particular the North. But Yemen historically has not had the sharp Sunni-Shia division some other countries have struggled with.

The Houthis are in the news again, and while international interest in them waxes and wanes, their takeover and movements have dictated the lives and political situation in Yemen for more than a decade.
•
Myself and the small international press corps in Sanaa covered their rise to power after the 2011 revolution, 2012 “election”, the 2013 National Dialogue, 2014 march toward Sanaa, and eventual 2015 takeover of the capital. Most of us were either pushed from the country or fled within the same year. I’ve been back to Yemen only once since.
•
While much of the coverage of the Houthis/Ansar Allah is oversimplified into “an armed Shia militia” that is precisely the reductive coverage that leads to such misunderstanding of the country and region. I’ll be sharing some images of the Houthis rise and their takeover from 2013-2015.

A Yemeni man sits atop a mountain in Faj Attan, a suburb of Sanaa, keeping watch. Below, tens of thousands stream into a gathering for the Prophet Mohammad’s birthday, Mawlid al Naby, in January 2013. Hussein al Houthi, the leader of the Houthis/Ansar Allah, gave a rousing speech to all in attendance.

If we weren’t already looking for a bothy in the area, we would have missed these ruins of a croft, truly hard to say how old. The moss-carpeted pine forest devours abandonment so quickly. It was breathtakingly quiet, all the sound muffled by moss and fern; it felt like a real faerie forest.

The best days were the moody ones, not uncommon in Scotland. But even thru the rain there was nearly always a speckling of sun thru the clouds, the Gaelic “breacadh na grèine”. Funnily enough they also used this term for freckles.

Never gotten so close to the end of the rainbow.

Scotland remains one of my favorite places in the world, and this was my first time experiencing it so intimately, hiking the West Highland Way over a week with a group of good friends. My first two times here were in the dead of winter - while the Scottish spirit prevailed, I’ve never been able to enjoy the greenery or fields of heather quite like this trip.
•
Glencoe is true magic, where somehow, you are part of the land, and the land becomes a part of you. More to come.

Another beautiful trip to the Southeast. It’s less brutally hot, manageable enough to bike landscaping plants in a backpack to the house for planting, to climb on the homemade wall without slipping off, and cool enough in the mornings to wear a sweater at dawn. NOT cool enough for the satanic mosquitos to disperse.

I don’t remember if I did a Mosul remembrance post this year - maybe not. It’s not quite been 10 years since liberation so maybe I was waiting for the “real anniversary”.
•
Thousands of patients, millions of lives changed, innumerable of memories, some of which I will cherish, many of which I’d prefer to forget.
•
These photos are not from Mosul, from Liberation Day of July 10, 2017, the day after Pete’s birthday. They’re from 6 weeks later in Tel Afar, a desert town to the west, a later routing of ISIS from areas surrounding the city. We slept in our trucks till we put the tents up, and even still in the truck beds for the night temperatures never dipped below 90°. I wanted to sleep on the ground but was too afraid of scorpions.
•
I look at these photos with what I can only described as the Welsh word “Hiraeth”. A longing and nostalgia for a place and time that cannot be returned to - and perhaps you don’t want to. I see in my eyes a bit of pain, a bit of exhaustion, honest enjoyment, and forced optimism. On my still-small shoulders, the weight has not settled and has yet to grow heavier with time. Surrounded by those I loved, a rag-tag multi-national family saving lives in the desert, wondering what happened to them beyond our cots.
