Yes, the heart is truly melting. It’s a surreal and out of body experience to be holding what was just an ambitious idea just 2.5yrs ago. And none of it would have been possible without the 50 emerging creatives that made the first issue or the countless friends that have supported and trusted us in giving a platform to young people in the arts. Ultimately that’s what the issue and @matesmagazine is about. Mates supporting mates. Supporting your friends. Friends supporting you. But the fight to shape the narrative of contemporary art is far from over. We need more spaces and opportunities created for the emerging. More space to help young people tell their own histories and define the value of art outside the structures of capital.

Stay tuned. Submissions for issue 2 will open this October.
