Olivia is a decorative font digitized from Instagram stories.

“My new font is this kind of like cursive, curlicue thing that I really love, and it felt girly and fun and it felt like the writing that you would use to write someone a love letter...”

This took a lot of work to find the glyphs that I could actually find, based on iOS’s keyboard, and even more work to figure out how many ligatures there are. I think about half of this font is just ligatures; I really wanted it to be as close to how it works on stories as possible and I’m glad I did the work but this took several weeks to get everything the way I wanted. I see so many people using this font and I wanted to have a way of archiving it before Instagram deletes it. When (not if; when) you download it from Gumroad, there’s also a font called Just Like Heaven, which I ripped from Olivia’s online store, and it seems to be an older version of this font. It’s a little wonkier and has less glyphs but I wanted it anyway in case anyone else did.

Also, on this font and in Instagram stories, if you type *** or <3 you get star and heart symbols!

You can download it for free in the shop on my portfolio website (on desktop only) at alexinkpen.com. It’s also on my gumroad at alexinkpen.gumroad.com/l/olivia (link in story/highlights/bio/comments).

Blackout is an abstract typeface inspired by redacted documents. Three different fonts are featured: Redacted, which is meant to simulate a hand-drawn marker crossing out sensitive information; Sanitized, a more digitally-inspired correction method; and Corrected, a white-out style variant of Redacted. Each glyph, including the word space glyph, is carefully protected to avoid any unintentional disclosure of information.

We (it’s just me) are keeping up the April Fools Day tradition of making a stupid typeface that you can actually use and download but can’t realistically use it for anything and isn’t legible at all. I think this is a natural progression from Doctor Note from last year, and I like how it turned out. Maybe next year I’ll make an invisible font that you can’t see.

You can download it for free in the shop on my portfolio website (on desktop only) at alexinkpen.com. It’s also on my gumroad at alexinkpen.gumroad.com/l/blackout (link in story/highlights/bio/comments).

Farewell is a pixel serif typeface digitized from thermal printer receipts. The font styles and glyphs are specifically sourced from MetroCard vending machine receipts. The name Farewell is inspired by the MetroCard, which is retiring at the end of the year, and the fact that the MetroCard is a fare payment method.

Figuring out how to design some of the styles, mainly Reverse and Underlined, in a way that functions as a digital font took more time and effort than I expected it to, mostly due to making sure everything was consistent and correct. Most of the work on this was done in July and I sat on this for several months before recently finishing it. That time away from it made me realize once I’d come back to it that the way I designed some of the other styles, mainly Double Height and Double Width, were originally very tedious, though it worked, and it could’ve been done in a much simpler way. It is normally very easy to stretch type in a certain direction in Illustrator, in a way that takes maybe two clicks, but I was using a calculator and doing math to double every glyph individually. Work smarter, not harder!

You can download it for free in the shop on my portfolio website (on desktop only) at alexinkpen.com. It’s also on my gumroad at alexinkpen.gumroad.com/l/farewell (link in story/highlights/bio/comments).

Bombardier is a dot matrix font digitized from automated station information (ASI) displays on Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad (MNR) trains. Constructed using a seven-by-ten dot grid, the letters are sourced from the destination displays on the exteriors of LIRR M7 and MNR M7A train cars.

This required a *lot* of research online looking at poorly filmed videos of specific trains and spending a full day in Grand Central running around trying to photograph several trains that had the letters I needed, and going up to Westchester county to see a very specific train. Also making the sides of the train cars look as realistic as possible in Illustrator with gradients and effects was very fun!

You can download it for free in the shop on my website (on desktop only) at alexinkpen.com/shop. It’s also on my gumroad at alexinkpen.gumroad.com/l/bombardier (link in story/highlights/bio/comments).

another poster (+an unused design) for next week’s show at @bushwickabbey with @swanrealmusic @the_clots and @zoinks.women

a very merry thank you to @megangloriadesign who made every single thing on these posters out of play-doh and then let me steal them to heavily edit something inspired by the play-doh work of @bersletters

Doctor Note is an abstract display font. Inspired by the illegibility of doctor’s handwriting, Doctor Note uses completely abstract lines to simulate the alphabet.

I honestly think this is such a stupid idea but I really love it, which is partly why I’m posting this on April Fool’s Day. It took some trial and error to make every letter line up when you type with it and still have it look like scribbled words. You can download it for free in the shop on my portfolio website (on desktop only) at alexinkpen.com. It’s also on my gumroad at alexinkpen.gumroad.com/l/doctor-note (link in story/highlights/bio/comments)

i drew the @lunar_vacation gang as the mystery gang inspired by their new song lights off 🔦

i used to draw all the time before college and i realized until it was too late that it’s essentially a muscle you have to workout often if you wanna continue to draw well so this is like a little exercise that took me almost a full week. i also hate showing my drawing process it feels like watching me get dressed but i love when procreate records the timelapse of it

Kinsley is an LCD display font inspired by an early seven segment display design found in Carl Kinsley’s 1903 patent for a method of electric signaling. Kinsley is a direct digitalization of the patent designs, which feature all 26 uppercase letters and 10 numbers only.

I don’t really consider this a portfolio project but you can download it for free in the shop on my portfolio website (on desktop only) at alexinkpen.com. It’s also on my gumroad at alexinkpen.gumroad.com/l/kinsley (link in story/highlights/bio/comments)
