Clara Tamashunas, born Clara Di Costanzo, was born in an internment camp in Rome in 1944.

She grew up in her family’s farming village, Santa Maria Infante, which had been leveled by German Troops during WWII. Bit by bit her family and the village itself restored the town from the rubble it was left in to a new version of the place it used to be. But my great grandmother, Lucia, always dreamed of going to America.

Clara’s father and Lucia’s husband, Arturo, was tragically killed by a landmine leftover from the war when my grandmother was around one year old. Five years later Lucia finally - bravely - moved herself and Clara to America when my grandmother was around 6 years old. The two of them settled in the Italian district of Philadelphia, where Lucia would later remarry and become Lucia Di Felice and Clara would (much later) meet her husband, William Tamashunas. Clara (known by many as Claire, at this point) loved how Christmas lights in the Italian district would be hung from house to house in a way that made them appear connected, a subtle nod to the unity of the Italian neighborhood at that point in time. By the time she would tell me this story, that tradition will have died.

Clara and William would have three children of their own, all boys. Those boys would go on to get married and have children, too, one of which would be me.

Clara was a nurse for much of her life. She was quirky and funny and known for her unwavering candor and unshakeable faith. She cared deeply for her family. She inspired me often. She was always around.

I asked my grandmother once what she remembered about her younger years and one of her many answers would be the word ‘survival’. She also shared plenty of wonderful, more gentle things; but this one stood out to me, a millennial who grew up with everything she needed.

My family was founded upon the backs of women who were forced to be brave, forced to be strong. They carried those qualities with grace, privacy, and no self pity whatsoever.

I am proud to be Clara’s grand daughter. Her story should be remembered.

Clara walked bravely into the unreachable night on December 18, 2025. She will be loved, always. by @alextamashunas

I said “you know a good way to avoid bear attacks is to speak at a normal volume throughout the entire hike.” Dylan said “yes but everyone knows the best way to avoid bear attacks is by singing anything by Creed. Loudly.”

In either event we didn’t get attacked by a bear taken in Jackson Hole, Wyoming by @alextamashunas
