This week in 1978, Van Halen’s debut album was certified platinum in the US, less than eight months after its release. 💿

For Alex Van Halen, there was little time to stop and take in the band’s rapidly growing success. Having finished their first album, he remembers expecting a break before discovering that the demands of life with a major record label were only beginning.

In Van Halen: The Anthology, Alex tells the story of this extraordinary period in his own words, as Van Halen went from the clubs of Southern California to an international breakthrough.

“GLITTER” ON VINYL

We are delighted to reveal that the exclusive 7” record accompanying VAN HALEN will feature “Glitter”, a previously unreleased live recording from 1974.

Featuring Alex Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen alongside David Lee Roth and original bassist Mark Stone, “Glitter” captures the band at the very beginning of its story. Released for the first time with Alex Van Halen’s signed limited edition, it will mark the earliest Van Halen recording ever to be officially released.

The record will also include a specially selected spoken-word recording from Alex Van Halen, drawn from his interviews with Genesis for the book.

Created exclusively for the VAN HALEN limited edition and revealed here for the first time, the 7” picture disc features artwork based on the band’s iconic 1984 tour design.

Alex is Knighted!

Alex Van Halen is now a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He received the honor from Mayor Hubert Bruls in the chapel of Radboud University in Nijmegen on Tuesday September 1, 2026. The honor is the highest civilian award given by The Netherlands.

Alex said that his award was also for Ed. "We grew up together in a small house with a small room, and at first, no one in Los Angeles took any notice of us. But through music, we broke out and conquered the world."
