MEXICAN HEAT >>> Photographer Alex Nicholson, a Mackem now living in the Mexican countryside, spent the opening day of the World Cup among the fans, documenting the streets, squares and spontaneous gatherings through the grain and saturated colours of disposable film. As the first nation to host three World Cups, Mexico responded in the only way it knows how: with pride, passion and a sea of creativity and colour that turned an already hot day into something unforgettable. “Nothing is ever going to beat seeing the passion Mexicans have for their national team. Despite the government corruption and chaos, they put it all aside and turn out in their millions. Every kid, parent, abuelita and even a duck decked out in the Mexican jersey is something you have to witness. It gives them pride in the darkest days. Reminds me of my supporters - Sunderland, but amplified by 1000. If ever I feel miles away from home or lost, you can find love and compassion with these fans. No racism or xenophobia, just maybe a little misplaced cultural confusion. Truly something that brings a nation together” @alexwnicholson by @alexwnicholson
