HAPPY - Alfa Abdulkadir

The future, as portrayed here is evidently dystopian, but that only tells part of the story: to consider Abdulkadir’s offering in full, we must consider it from the perspective of the characters within. How is a “dystopia” perceived by the individuals who are living in it? In ‘The Chosen One’, a swarm of fleshy arms reach out to the machine. It remains slightly outside of their reach, but the arms continue to grasp in reach of something, a sort of futuristic religiosity.

Alfa Abdulkadir is thinking about future happiness.

O’DA Art: Happy | Alfa Abdulkadir

Capturing the phenomenon of blind devotion to machines and systems no longer understood by their users. Reflecting on how technology, once utilitarian, might evolve into mystified objects of faith, worshipped not for their function, but for the hope they represent.

Happy is not approached as a fixed emotion, but as a condition. It is fleeting, constructed, pursued, and at times, performed.

Happy proposes that joy is not the absence of complexity, but its companion. It is something we arrive at, return to, lose, and remake, again and again.

Silent Hosts is a sculptural seating series that re imagines the traditional stool as both a functional object and a vessel for art.

Each monolithic stool stands alone in minimal form, but transforms into a chair when a modular backrest/ art piece is attached the backrest/art pieces are shaped to resemble human faces, carved to evoke subtle expressions.

One of the final additions to the Organizing Principle Series that I developed, and I guess is fitting as this sculpture represents in a way a transition between past,present and future.
