What's the hip actually doing? In an alpine ski turn, the hip is not simply flexing and extending. Its position helps determine how the skier's body is organized relative to the skis and the external forces acting on the system. In this series, I use a real ski turn combined with 3D biomechanical analysis to look at what each joint is actually doing. What is the knee actually doing during a wedge turn? The knee is not simply flexing and extending. Its position changes the alignment of the lower limb and the way external forces are transmitted through the kinetic chain. Biomechanics of skiing - Sagittal-plane angles The ankle, knee, and hip flexion/extension angles are essential in alpine skiing because they control the skier's fore–aft balance, COM position, pressure on the skis, and force management. Ankle: controls the relationship between the lower leg and ski boot, strongly influencing fore–aft balance and pressure distribution. Knee: acts as a major force-management joint, allowing the skier to absorb terrain, regulate pressure, and change COM height. Hip: controls the position of the pelvis and COM relative to the skis, contributing to balance and pressure management. Biomechanics The three joints work as a kinematic chain: Ankle → Knee → Hip → Pelvis → Trunk Therefore, their angles should not be considered independently. What matters is their coordinated change throughout the turn. In essence: sagittal-plane flexion and extension allow the skier to stay balanced over the skis and efficiently absorb, transmit, regulate, and release forces throughout the turn. Ski technique and biomechanics by @z.erikaa The other day, someone asked me: “What do you think about when you’re skiing?” Honestly… I don’t think. I feel. I feel the pressure building through the outside ski. I feel the edges bite into the snow, the skis bending through the turn, and the exact moment to release the edges and transition into the next one. My focus stays on balance, timing, and keeping my upper body stable while my legs do the work. These aren’t conscious thoughts anymore—they’re instincts built over thousands of hours on snow. Maybe that’s why I love skiing so much. When I’m on the mountain, everything else disappears.
