I’m deeply grateful to have been a part of the inaugural Hellbender Gathering of Poets in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Poets, authors, ecologists, naturalists and activists united with purpose and joy, cultivating attention and craft in support of all beings on our climate-changed planet. Craft talks, awe walks, readings, and even a chestnut planting ceremony. But the best part was the people I met, the deep and genuine conversations, the eye-opening and heart rending craft talks and readings. The marvelous, featured poets! Deepest thanks to Nickole Brown, Marina Pruna, Halley cotton and so many others for all the love and work they put into making this such a warm, welcoming and transformative experience. by @alfournierwrites

R.S. Mengert contemplates what it is to inhabit a body conscribed to inevitable death while casting in religious and profane imagery a memorable monument to a human existence. With vivid imagination and sure-footed language, he navigates a labyrinth of family experience, Christian history and philosophy, literature and pop culture, while never failing to keep the reader grounded in the heaviness of a body, earthbound yet yearning and sensing, and occasionally sampling from, the bounty of eternity.
