Just a little cheat sheet to help you figure out if you should buy the transplant or buy the pack of seeds— or both!

I had a post like this blow up a while ago and I thought I’d make a slightly updated version. In this edit, I adjusted some things to take into consideration factors like shorter growing seasons (for example: in LA where I have a really long growing season, I always plant my cucumbers and gourds from seed, but in Canada I opt to get the transplants too, because the season is a lot shorter and I need the extra head-start.)

It went like this:

- I went for a walk by my favorite neighborhood garden
- collected some seed from a prolific cosmos
- when I got home, I planted that seed in my raised bed, and then immediately forgot about it
- I left town for 2 months (summer ☀️)
- came back to find a gigantic monstrosity of a cosmos growing aka my cosmos tree !

She took forever to flower (until October!), but man was she worth the wait. I didn’t fertilize or pinch, all she had was a steady irrigation source. I do amend my beds with compost and worm castings every season, usually twice a season 🪱 🪴 🪏

this is by far my favorite new summer ritual

Coffee on the dock with Penny is the only way to start the day ☕️ 🐕

She’s 11 years old now and I’m on a mission to make the last years of her life the best ones ✨ she’s so happy in the country so we try to be up here as much as possible (and so am I 👀 🥰 🌲 )

🦨 if not pet, why pet shaped 🫶🏼

At this point, the skunks have taken over my neighborhood. Part of me loves them, because (1) they’re very cute, see exhibit above (2) they eat the grubs from my garden, and I have a serious grub problem (3) they’re pretty sweet and docile if you leave them be (4) did I say cute?? especially the babies running around, omg

On the other hand, there are some issues (1) my dog has been skunked too many times (does she learn? She does not) so that is not fun and (2) when eating said grubs, they aren’t always delicate in their search, sometimes it’s a crime scene out there (though in those instances idk if it was the cats or the skunks, to be fair

Ok, those are most of my thoughts on my stinky little neighbor friends 🦨 🪴 🦨

This is one of those “do as I say, not as I do,” situations, but sometimes I just can’t help myself ✂️ 🍃 ☀️ 😬

As a general rule, not a good idea to cut back your plants during a heat wave, they’re stressed enough with the heat (though I did do this in the morning, it was already hot enough to be not the most ideal time for it)

My cucumber plants aren’t looking very good right now (leaves yellowing, signs of leaf miners, leaves crumpling at the edges, some just dying) though this is pretty normal for this time of year. They’re still producing quite a bit though, so I’m riding them out till the very end 🥒

My garden is not happy about this heat wave (there have been casualties….but I don’t want to get into that right this second).

Thankfully, the cucumbers keep on keeping on, and I’m grateful for that (the plants themselves don’t look so great, but the cucumbers taste fantastic, so whatever)

I am ready for fall, ready for this heat to subside, ready for pumpkins and fall seedlings and sugar snap peas and HEAT JUST GO AWAY ok tysm

Penny waits for me on the deck so we can walk down to the dock together to have our morning coffee ☕️ 🥹

Normally, this is our summer ritual, as that’s usually when we’re up here, but we’re lucky enough to be here for a wedding this weekend, so I got to catch the most beautiful time of yearrrr 🍂✨🫶🏼 the leaves changing color in Autumn is one of my favorite things in life (as is my dog), so I’m very grateful to be up here right now, and grateful for Penny, the best coffee date around 🐕 ☕️ 🌲 🍁

Some pictures my mom sent me from the country garden this week 🪴 heading up there soon to see for myself ✨🍂💐😊

The dahlias have definitely been the star of the summer. Nonstop blooms from June through September ✨✨✨✨

Thinking of starting a new series, ‘Garden Fail of the Week’, since I post a lot of my successes in the garden, but I don’t always show the things that go wrong. I’ve been meaning to show more of that side of things— I think it’s good to be reminded that most gardens are imperfect, things get forgotten, overwatered, overrun with bugs, etc.

Gardening is a lot of wins, a lot of losses, a lot of experiments and surprises and “oops, I forgot about that plant”. Also some heartbreaks!! (I lost some pumpkins this year and last that I still get misty eyed over.) I have about 5 more baby cantaloupes growing on this vine, so I’m not too devastated about this one. I also noticed some holes in the cantaloupe earlier on (before it ripened) so I knew it was a loss already, but I kept it growing a bit longer because I wanted to see it ripen and then open it up, but by the time I came back around to it, it was too gross and overrun with bugs 🍈 will post another reel showing all the other little cantaloupe babies and then hopefully have a few that ripen without any bugs getting to them (I’m open to suggestions, as long as they’re organic )

Cucamelons : it’s my first year growing them, and they are so fun and delicious!! Planted them by seed, & this is one plant

It’s like a tiny cucumber mixed with a melon (hence the name)

My son is obsessed ☀️
