This honestly started as one of those “let me try this for two minutes” moments. I just got the new M-Audio keyboard and wanted to mess around with looping for the first time. But instead of doing percussion loops, I started with orchestral strings and a small ostinato. Then more layers came in. Then horns. And suddenly I was sitting there feeling like I was building a tiny film score in real time.

Wasn’t even planning to post this. I just got too excited and turned the camera on.

Join us on August 15th at the Lesley University Hall Screening Room for a special evening screening of Path of Totality, an intimate experimental film by Homa Sarabi that weaves together the legacy of her father’s banned post-revolutionary musical and newly shot 2024 eclipse footage. Composer and musician Ali Arshi will provide a live score, enhancing the film’s exploration of censorship’s hidden violences—past and present—through 16 mm footage, handmade animation, and hybrid analog–digital editing.⁠

Ali Arshi is a multi-genre composer and multi-instrumentalist scoring for film, media, games, and world music. A Berklee grad (World Tour Full Scholarship; String Department Achievement Award), he blends music tech with Iranian and broader Middle Eastern traditions—performing on tar and voice, founding RazAvaz for ensemble improvisation—and works across studio production and live sound engineering.⁠
