Ali Berger @aliberger.dr5 is a New York City-based electronic musician and DJ. The heart of his work is a lovingly-cultivated practice of improvisation as part of a balanced spiritual life that’s always growing. Sometimes the result sounds like the mechanized funk of Midwest house and techno; other times it’s layered melodies and gently freaked rhythms native to the drum machines and grooveboxes Ali programs in real-time. Constantly recording and sharing via his Trackland imprint (and recent offshoots Dreaming Dog and DepthWorks Audio Geometry), Ali continues to build an open world of music and visual art now over 400 tracks deep across more than 90 releases. He also writes and shares videos about the creative process, sketching connections between the nuts and bolts of getting work done and the parts of our emotional lives that run things behind the scenes. Whether making music, DJing, or playing one of his fully-improvised live sets, Ali arrives with the intention to loosen up and be curious about whatever strange truth each moment has to offer.

I first came across Ali’s work at present sounds session at @lightandsounddesign and then again at @fourthworldnyc and was amazed by the vastness of his taste and artistry that channels his inner world - excited for what he’s going to present on Oct 18 for Hinoki 🍀

🪩 A contemporary post-disco anthem that pays tribute to Delia Derbyshire’s pioneering 1969 track ‘Love Without Sound’? The stunning ‘On My Mind’ could only come from the imagination of @eli_vision aka The Chic Patina, featuring gorgeous vocals from Asia-James (@theasiajames).

🧨 ‘SunSunHahara Hausu’ is a no-nonsense hit of dancefloor rocket fuel from Knopha (@knopha), who I had the pleasure of meeting at OIL Club, Shenzhen, in 2024. Known for delicate releases on labels like Mule Musiq and Mood Hut, here he eschews the light touch and goes full-on firecracker mode.

🎹 It’s been six years since I first asked Ali Berger (@aliberger.dr5) if he wanted to release music on Welt Discos and finally it’s happening. Anyone who’s listened to my mixes or seen me play will know I’m a Trackland stan through and through. ‘Plasma Flow’ plays with funk and freestyle influences in Ali’s own inimitable style.

On Oct 17-18, Hinoki takes over @planetx.studios for two nights of collective listening, immersive dance performances with large scale suspended projections and installations 🦋

On Oct 17, @the_sound_sculptress , LA-based DJ, producer, and label head of Delusional Records, brings sets that swirl airy vocals, metallic textures, and rigid grooves across releases on Yuku and Scuffed Recordings. Brooklyn’s @iamjuliehill , a singer-producer whose synth-driven, ambient work has drawn praise from Pitchfork, Stereogum, and KEXP, moves between the meditative calm of her 2024 album glow serene and the anxious rock of her single “Be Well.” Scott @scoyoh a celebrated violinist brings exprerimental, harrowing sounds to hinoki, he was commissioned by Vim Vigor Dance Company for a site-specific piece in 2021 and won 1st place at the 2019 Prix D’Été for his electroacoustic chamber work memoriae.

On Oct 18 lines up Ali Berger @aliberger.dr5 whose deep improvisational practice moves between the mechanized funk of Midwest house and gently freaked drum-machine rhythms, has built a catalog 400 tracks deep across his Trackland imprint and its offshoots. @suzie_sanford and @mattrecife two rising stars who became friends at NYU Steinhardt joins the night with a special collab. Suzie, a producer and member of @3rdave.live — collective championing underground rap and hyperpop — spent four years touring NYC, Sacramento, and Prague; Solo, she trades the group’s energy for moodier, ambient textures on hardware synths. Matthew, a Brooklyn-based classically trained saxophonist, has performed with R&B, pop, and experimental artists and taken the stage at Juilliard and the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center
Hinoki creator @jennchanx — a Hong Kong native now based in New York — presents the world-building soundtracks that inspired Hinoki: music gathered across a decade of moving between homes and searching for rootedness. Hinoki is where the things she treasured most as a child — dance, music, and performance — quietly come together, connecting an inner, meditative world to collective motion.

We’re back 🏎️🏁
Grand Prix is back again at @bossanovacivicclub with 2 local legends at the wheel. We are excited to invite house hardware extraordinaire @aliberger.dr5 who’s productions have soundtracked this dancefloor countless times; a true master at work. Next newcomer is @marianagirald0 , your favorite dj’s favorite dj. A real highlight for Grand Prix, her selection and skill are hardly matched.

Closing out the night, co label head @talker.info takes to the decks to keep the energy moving. Rounding out the night, a special live hardware set from the better half of GP, @cades hits you with elektron boxes of which science has yet to describe.

last month for @ericknidal 's soul fortis show on @radioalhara i played & talked about "unlocked" music that has freed me from rules & expectations and why that's so important, not just for making cool music but also for making a more liveable world. really grateful for erick talking through these ideas with me and encouraging me to speak more, and to radio alhara providing space to explore this format. follow them both to stay in touch with great programming, for example another episode of soul fortis airing soon ❤️ by @aliberger.dr5

Bklyn Live Music PSA! Dada Strain returns to its favorite NYC arts loft, Light & Sound Design Studios (L&SD) in Greenpoint, for another presentation of rhythm-improvisation-community music, on Saturday, August 22nd, 7p.

It’s a great dog-days-of-summer program, with grooves, melodies and harmonies deliriously abstract but squarely in-the-pocket. The mighty percussionist/sound artist Lesley Mok will celebrate the recent release of their second solo album, 'transient,' a wonderful work that mixes drums and machines in unexpectedly gratifying ways. My woodwinds- and reeds-playing brother Tomin will bring some old and some new music he’s been messing around with - and possibly a special-guest friend. Ali Berger will close the night with one of his live-hardware, beat-wise electronic improvisations, the kind that have made him an indispensable member of the Bklyn dance-music community since his return to NYC.

The evening is produced with the generous help of FourOneOne.

Dada Strain @ L&SD is a bi-monthly series of live performances by (primarily) local musicians, improvisers and DJs, an evening that encompasses both deep listening and body movement.
