Back to Italy during the night.
Already missing my sweet sweet patio home, the tiny shops and workshops, the narrow streets of la Medina, the colours and light
…et toutes les folies tunisiennes…

All my gratitude to @leila.bengacem and @sihlamine

Participatory mapping in Tunis! Today the international CIRCE group in Tunis — bringing together researchers from the University of Macerata, the University of Tunis, UNED Madrid, the University of Split, and Mdinti Tunis — carried out a participatory mapping activity focused on identifying forms of contested heritage that generate tensions, debates, and conflicting interpretations.

One key insight emerged clearly: contested heritage is deeply shaped by historical perspective. What was considered controversial ten years ago may no longer be perceived as such today, while contemporary urgencies continuously produce new dissonances. Heritage once seen as neutral can become contested in response to new conflicts, migration dynamics, and ongoing social and political transformations. taken in Tunis, Tunisia by @alice.devecchi

In the heart of La Medina, that is the heart of Tunis, an ongoing participatory project with schools and higher education institutions across Tunisia, brings art and crafts on the walls of a very special place, the first and only tunisian communtiy garden grown and cared by the inhabitants.

1001 Bricks sets out a freshly new narrative of La Medina through Art.

When collaborative practices bound with arts are animated by passionate people like the one in @mdintitunisia, revolutions can happen!

We discovered such an amazing project thanks to @project.circe.

Today, the international Circe research group had its first encounter with the Medina of Tunis through an inspiring introduction by Leila Ben Gacem and a guided tour with Mdinti. As we prepare our participatory mapping activities with local communities, important questions emerge: who defines cultural heritage? Why do we label ceramics as “Andalusian,” “Italian,” “Ottoman,” or “Spanish” as if cultures followed fixed borders? And why are minority religious sites still so often overlooked?

The Medina of Tunis challenges us to rethink heritage, categories, and the eurocentric lenses through which history is too often interpreted.

At the Bardo Museum there’s a section which exhibits some sculptures and architectural elements found by chance in 1907 in front of the tunisian coasts. Archaelogists established that all the pieces were part of the cargo of a ship wrecked in the 1st Century AD, sailing from Athens to Rome or Pompei.
It’s funny how this story recalled me immediately the well known project ‘Treasures from the wreck of the Unbelievable’ by Damien Hirst (last image). There the artist built a narrative about the fictional discovery of a 2000 years old shipwreck… taken in Museo nazionale del Bardo by @alice.devecchi

Yesterday CIRCE did magic again! Citizens of Ancona, together with scholars and artists from Croatia, Tunisia, Uganda, Kenya and Mozambico, hosted by the bookshop/publishing house Affinità Elettive, engaged in a thoughtful discussion and collectively built a map of #controversialheritage of the city of Ancona. This is magic! Isn’t it? @project.circe taken in Affinità Elettive Edizioni by @alice.devecchi
