“In the wake of destruction, water, mountains, trees, and soil gain in significance and overflow with sacred meaning and affect.”

When buildings and places are destroyed, and property cannot be returned, the land itself (its rivers, trees and mountains) starts to carry memory. Today, Prof. Dr. Alice von Bieberstein (@alicebieberstein) will speak about how descendants of survivors of the Armenian genocide meet the land of their ancestors.

🍃This Thursday at Sensing Loss: Prof. Dr. Alice von Bieberstein(@alicebieberstein)

“Sehnsucht und Berührungsängste: Westarmenien für die Nachfahren der Überlebenden des armenischen Völkermords”
(Longing and fear of contact: Western Armenia for the descendants of survivors of the Armenian genocide)

Genocidal violence shatters and destroys worlds. Until 1915, the region now called Eastern Turkey, also known as Northern Kurdistan, was part of the historical homeland of Armenians. During World War I, around 1.5 million of them were expelled and murdered. Survivors were forced to assimilate or slowly moved to the cities of Western Turkey and later abroad. For decades this land was out of reach; only in recent decades has a careful kind of pilgrimage tourism begun.

The talk looks at genocidal violence as a radical force of separation, and at what this means for how descendants in the diaspora meet the land of their ancestors with their senses and bodies.

Crip Fieldwork Toolkit: Hacks and Methods to Make Fieldwork Work as a Disabled Researcher

Our zine is out! This toolkit offers hacks and methods for disabled researchers doing fieldwork.

It features contributions by:
@alicebieberstein @aoife_donnellan_ @code.beschler elliot.mrozinski @___erin.d @izpaehr @kimmerrlee @magdalenaewabu

It was developed during the workshop Tooling Access: Developing Methods and Hacks for Crip Fieldwork by Iz Paehr, as part of the project Cripping Ethnographic Methods. The project is organised by the working group Collective Access of the Institute for European Ethnography at Humboldt University Berlin.

Disabled researchers face significant barriers when doing fieldwork. During the workshop, we collected and invented hacks, methods, and dreams towards crip fieldwork. We are sharing them with you all in this zine.

Check it out via disabledethnographers.com/cripfieldworktoolkit (flip book, link in bio) & izpaehr.xyz/cripfieldworktoolkit.html (PDF download) Two hands of a white person, Iz, hold a booklet into the camera. On the cover, the title reads: Crip Fieldwork Toolkit. Hacks and Methods to Make Fieldwork Work as a Disabled Researcher. This text is displayed atop a curved white banner, that sits playfully stop a vivid photgraph of a pillbox. The pills form a mesmerizing pattern. by @alicebieberstein

Drawing on the criminalization of the Kurdish freedom movement in Germany, Alice von Bieberstein examines how citizenship is changing in Germany. The repression of Kurds takes the form of a proxy counterinsurgency. Consequently, citizenship shifts from monitoring national boundaries of belonging to forging geopolitical alliances.

Study Projects – Presentations!

As is customary in the summer term, the study projects on the Master’s program “Ethnography: Theory – Practice – Critique” present their research during the last two sessions of the IfEE Institute Colloquium.

And now, we are looking forward to a presentation from the second study project:

Attempts at an abolitionist anthropology: a snapshot

Abolitionist struggles and theories analyse the intertwining of oppression and exploitation in both the nation-state and global capitalist contexts – with a focus on security infrastructures, strategies of criminalisation and forms of disenfranchisement. They draw on the knowledge of indigenous and resistance movements in the pursuit of the abolition of state, capitalism and patriarchy. Participants in this study project introduce abolitionist debates and link them to impressions from an excursion to Amed/Diyarbakir, where we explored the history and practice of the Kurdish freedom movement, as well as to their own research projects.

Coordination & Moderation: Alice von Bieberstein / @alicebieberstein

75,000 Armenians. 113 churches. 66 monasteries. 87 schools. More than 100 villages across the plain.

By the summer of 1915, almost all of them were dead or gone.

In her book “Temptations in Ruin: Sovereign Accumulation and the Making of Post-Genocide Turkey” (University of Pennsylvania Press), anthropologist Dr. Alice von Bieberstein argues that 1915 didn’t end in 1915.

A century later, the last historic Armenian quarter of Mush was demolished by the state. Neighbors dug through the rubble for buried Armenian gold. One family fought to preserve the last standing house. Diaspora Armenians came and wept at church ruins.

Dr. von Bieberstein shows these are not separate stories. They are all expressions of what she calls sovereign accumulation - value extracted from a history of genocide that the state refuses to name but continues to exploit. The genocide restructured who owns land, who has rights, and whose history gets to exist. That restructuring is still ongoing.

The full program is now live on the NAASR YouTube channel. Link in bio.
