9/9/1934–8/11/2025
I can tell you he was his usual hearty self in December 2024. Doctors shaking his hand when they found out he was 90. He was contemplating pickle ball because he couldn’t serve in tennis anymore.

But in January of this year, an infection turned septic. Two weeks in the ICU, three more in rehab and he came back home with a walker, weak but determined. He wanted to drive. He wanted to live independently. He did not want the walker.

The next seven months he was in the hospital more than he was home. Two TIA’s, resistant infection, two surgical procedures . Every time he went in he came back out, determined.

On July 30th he and my mother got dressed up and met friends for dinner at Westminster’s Lakeside dining. The next morning he was back in the ER septic again, as sick as I’d seen him in January.

I called my brother and sister. Dad might be ready to move across the lake. The euphemism he used when discussing final wishes once he decided to have his ashes spread on the mountain side of Twin Lakes where he caught that big bass. You can see the spot over his left shoulder.

He rallied again and by the end of the week, he was back at Westminster skilled nursing for rehab. Only 24 hours later, he was back in the ER. He was pale and weak, discouraged. But when my husband and I sat with him, we did not talk about a journey across the lake. Instead, we went through the list of books he’d like checked out and which ones we should take back. He asked me to buy a bouquet for the nurse manager at Westminster who’d gone above and beyond caring for him. He picked out the one he wanted from the FTD site on my phone and I composed the card for his approval.

Just as he been back-and-forth all year, so had we been — prepared to say goodbye, then back to taking orders and arguing about why he couldn’t drive.

So on August 11 at 7:26 AM when I got the call, I was totally shocked and completely un-surprised.
We are relieved, proud, heartbroken, and grateful.
